Two of Clooney's late-'50s/early-'60s RCA Victor albums on one CD. Clap Hands! Here Comes Rosie! is an upbeat session from 1960 on which Clooney, superbly fronting a band conducted by Bob Thompson, tackles standards like "Give Me the Simple Life," "Bye Bye Blackbird," and "Makin' Whoopee." Fancy Meeting You Here is a 1958 duet album with Bing Crosby on which the duo runs through a set of place-themed songs ("Calcutta," "Hindustan," "It Happened in Monterey") with a band splendidly conducted by Billy May. Two of Rosie's best on one disc - a real bargain.

A Major Fancy is Lees's paintbrush of rock music, done outside Barclay James Harvest despite that not completely disconnected from the big band. The recording finished in 1972, but everything went on stand-by until late 1976-1977. As the grand vocalist in BJH, Lees receive, right here, both a greater freedom of expression and a weaker kind of inspiration. His album is placid (even lowly significant) but fruitful, plotted on an unforgettable serenity, nevertheless full of flavor.

While the music made by Bill Bruford's earlier Earthworks band was consistently more interesting, his current lineup continues to make great strides given its more traditional stance (post-bop acoustic piano/saxophone quartet verses ultra-modern Euro-jazz fusion). On the live Footloose and Fancy Free, the group exceeds its own studio performances with room to spare. The lovely ballad "Come to Dust" is a fine showcase for pianist Steve Hamilton, and Bruford's punchy drumming moves a complex "Triplicity." Even non-Earthworks tunes from Bruford's late-'90s collaborations with Tony Levin ("Original Sin") and Ralph Towner ("If Summer Had Its Ghosts") get inspiring interpretations as well, thanks to the well-seasoned playing of both tenor/alto saxophonist Patrick Calahar and Hamilton.
