Blending jazz improvisation, post-John Cage modernism, funk and the occasional touch of rock, the Art Ensemble of Chicago and its co-founder, Roscoe Mitchell, made good on the ambition of its motto: "Great Black Music, Ancient to the Future". Mr. Mitchell formed that group in the wake of his involvement in the 1965 founding of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, a pathbreaking collective of black artists known as the A.A.C.M.

This was one of the legendary tenor saxophonist’s final recording sessions before his death on November 5, 1996. Recorded in 1994 with a marvelous quartet, Freedom Jazz Dance is a portrait of a musical titan with his creative muse in full bloom. Eddie Harris and his tenor sax join together with Jacky Terrasson, piano; George Mraz, bass, and Billy Hart, drums, to compile an eight-track SACD full of jazz's favorite staples as well as originals by quartet members. His immediately recognizable sound is beautifully showcased on this disc.

Each volume in the 'Portraits' series is devoted to a French composer who has now largely been forgotten. With performances by many talented artists, it presents a panorama of his works. The 'Portrait' of Félicien David aims to complement the discography already available with world premiere recordings of the composer's works. Among these are a glimpse of his orchestral output, with the Symphony no. 3 and the Overture to his opéra-comique La Perle du Brésil, the work that really launched David on his operatic career.

JAPANDROIDS are maximal in their delivery; a two- piece band sounding like a five-piece band. With the release of their second album, Celebration Rock in 2012 the band embarked on what seemed like an endless world tour, performing over 200 shows in over 40 countries, and played their final show in support of Celebration Rock in Buenos Aires, Argentina in November 2013. They would not perform live again for three years.

One of the most glorious launches in history, the title track for the thrice-platinum The Final Countdown is so bombastically brilliant, such glorious garbage, that this nuclear hair assault could only spew from the vacuous '80s. But the full-tilt follow-up "Rock the Night" rules also: "You know it ain't easy/Running out of thrills." "Carrie" comes off a consummate butane ballad. Meanwhile, the rest of the disc packs so much power that Swedish superheroes Europe get away with all the processed pretension. In fact, the lofty ambition of "Danger on the Track," "Ninja," and "Cherokee" (each as tasty as its title) combines with heated drive and hot delivery to meld The Final Countdown into a unique portrait of propulsive prog and a worthy addition to any hard rock collection.
