Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen's reputation rests on his operas, particularly the first two (The Red Line and The Horseman) which, together with Kokkonen's The Last Temptations, at one stroke put the Finnish National Opera on the world musical map and also offered composers a fruitful territory to explore–one that had not already been covered by Sibelius. Sallinen's orchestral music, on the other hand, is something of a mixed bag. The notes to this excellent new release point out that his embrace of tonality in the 1970s was a radical step for a composer in his position, but it's not surprising given that his music largely disdains traditional counterpoint and lives on coloristic and (above all) harmonic effects.

Folk / Nordic Folk / Finland

JPP – short for Järvelän Pikkupelimannit ( "Little Folk Musicians of Järvelä" ) – originally formed in 1983 as a local fiddle orchestra in the small town of Järvelä, Finland. Formed around the nucleus of 3 fiddlers, including leader Arto Järvelä, a harmonium player, and a bass player, they spent most of the Eighties and early Nineties gathering a devoted following in Finland and across the world and the reputation of being particularly inventive interpreters of Finland's rich folk heritage.

All of the surviving music from the Miles Davis Quintet’s Newport sets of 1966 and 1967 - all previously unissued. Both sets were taken from the original live radio broadcasts and present exactly the same personnel. As a bonus, this disc adds the only two surviving tracks from the same quintet’s performance in Helsinki on November 1, 1967. Miles Davis’ music was (as almost always throughout his career) going through a transitional period in 1966. His quintet, featuring Shorter, Hancock, Carter and Williams, was on the verge of removing standards from the repertoire, to make room for Miles’ compositions, and the group itself would soon change from an acoustic to an electric format.

Recorded over a 13-year time span (1992–2005), this is a remarkable disc. On first glance, it screams “specialist.” A whole hour-plus of music by territory-specific composers for clarinet or bass clarinet and cello may send many prospective purchasers heading in the opposite direction. But they would be forgetting the innate musicality of the Finns.

Humppa Folk Metal

Finntroll is a folk metal band from Helsinki, Finland. They combine elements of black metal and folk metal. Finntroll's lyrics are mostly in Swedish, the only exception being the song "Madon Laulu" on Visor Om Slutet. Finntroll's first singer Katla decided to use Swedish over Finnish since he was part of a Swedish-speaking minority in Finland and the sound of the language seemed to better suit the band's "trollish" outfit.[1] Despite several vocalist changes, this tradition has continued.According to bandmembers Vreth and Skrymer, they took their name from an old Finnish legend where Swedish priests coming to Finland had an encounter with a wild-looking man who killed most of their party. “Children of the Dark Waters is the sixth studio album by Finnish band Eternal Tears of Sorrow. It is scheduled for release in May 2009 through Suomen Musiikki for Finland, Massacre Records for the rest of Europe and Marquee/Avalon Records for Asia. It is the second album to feature Jarmo Kylmänen on clean vocals, but his first album as an official member.

The album will be in the same vein as Before the Bleeding Sun, but darker. "Angelheart, Ravenheart (Act II: Children of the Dark Waters)" is the second part of "Angelheart, Ravenheart (Act I: Before the Bleeding Sun)" from Before the Bleeding Sun. On the UK Amazon edition "Vilda Mánnu" is replaced by "Sea of Whispers (Acoustic Reprise)" as a bonus track.

The album's first single was "Tears of Autumn Rain" released in Finland on February 18 and featured female vocals by Miriam Renvåg (Ram-Zet) and Heidi Parviainen (Amberian Dawn). The B-side of the single is a reworked version of "Vilda Mánnu" from the self-titled album, Vilda Mánnu. The album was mixed at Finnvox Studios (Helsinki, Finland) in March and April 2009 by Mikko Karmila and like the previous five albums, it was recorded at Tico-Tico Studios in Kemi. Lead guitarist Risto Ruuth left the band right before the release of the album, and was replaced by Mika Lammassaari (from Mors Subita).”WIKIPEDIA

Symphonic Power Metal

Nightwish are a symphonic metal band from Kitee, Finland. The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and former lead singer Tarja Turunen. The band soon picked up drummer Jukka Nevalainen, and then bassist Sami Vänskä after the release of their debut album, Angels Fall First (1997). In 2001, Vänskä was replaced by Marco Hietala, who also took over the male vocalist role previously filled by Holopainen or guest singers…
