Tender Feelin's is an appropriate title for Duke Pearson's second album for Blue Note. The record is a lovely, relaxed collection of ballads, standards, and jazz staples, with a few originals thrown in for good measure. Since Pearson sticks to the trio format, supported by bassist Gene Taylor and drummer Lex Humphries, the mood of the album remains intimate and low-key. Pearson flourishes in this setting, whether he's playing blues, romantic ballads, or surprisingly lyrical improvised solos. Pearson would later explore more adventurous territory, as well as funkier grooves, but Tender Feelin's remains a wonderfully understated, romantic mainstream jazz record.

Just about anything that is released by Duke Ellington is worth hearing, but this 3 disc set is important in that it covers a period of Ellingtonia that is rarely heard; when Hodges and others left the venerable band to pursue solo careers, leaving the leader to gather new artists and new sounds. Big Band jazz was no longer the “thing” as bebop and Rhythm and Blues were the big money makers. Still The Duke kept moving forward, bringing in Clarke Terry/tp, Paul Gonsalves/ts and Louie Bellson with his double bass drums to create some new sparks.

Conversations involve an exchange - a giving and a receiving. The best conversations occur when the partners are really listening to each other. Jazz is conversation. Here we have five musicians one May day in Toronto, having conversations with each other. This recording was done with no rehearsal and only a few charts. What you're hearing is mostly the first or second takes. This is a rarity to hear "live" undoctored music these days. And what a treat it is to hear bassist John Lamb (former bassist for Duke Ellington) in conversation with his Canadian friends north of the border. The "North of the border" musicians all believe that jazz should be fun and you can hear them enjoying themselves with these wonderful conversations. Their music together builds a wonderful bridge across the border.

1938 was a very busy year for Duke Ellington in the recording studios, whether making classics with his big band or being the pianist and organizer of sessions allegedly led by his sidemen. This disc has plenty of big-band sides and combo dates led by clarinetist Barney Bigard, trumpeter Cootie Williams, and altoist Johnny Hodges. Most notable among the selections are "Stepping Into Swing Society," "Echoes of Harlem," "The Gal From Joe's," "I Let a Song Go out of My Heart," and "Jeep's Blues," but there are no throwaways among these three-minute gems.
