Ism opens audaciously with the spiritual mic-check “You Are Free To Choose,” a track that features Junius Paul alongside Vincent Davis (drums), Justin Dillard (piano), and Corey Wilkes (horns). This is by no accident. In many ways, “You Are Free To Choose” captures the spirit of Junius Paul’s artistic roots. Corey, Justin, and Vincent were among the multigenerational cadre of Chicago musicians present when Junius chose to follow his own path of creative discovery at the storied Velvet Lounge on the South Side of the city back in October of 2002.

…The tone is cheerful and easygoing, like that of a well-loved man entertaining his neighbors. Which is not to say this is a throwaway; the phrasing and rhythms are crisp, and the ragtime-speckled folk/blues guitar accomplished.

For the past two decades pianist Fred Hersch has created something all jazz musicians strive for: his own unique style. That style is on display on this three-CD collection that primarily features Hersch's sterling solo pianisms. The first disc contains Hersch's "Songs Without Words," a six-suite work that highlights Hersch's articulate touch and evokes French impressionism, the Argentinean tango, and the jazz waltz. His earliest compositions follow the suite, such as the lullaby-like "Child's Song" and the heartbreaking melody of "Sarabande." The second disc is Hersch's tribute to several jazz composers from Duke Ellington to Dizzy Gillespie.

In the winter of 1968/’69, Ian Anderson assembled a lively country blues band for his debut album Stereo Death Breakdown…
