It is easy to think of saxophonist Ari Brown as the heir to the late, great Chicago tenorists Von Freeman and Fred Anderson but that would not be a fair assessment. Far more than a successor, Brown is the youngest and remaining member of a powerfully unique musical triumvirate. His idiosyncratic style is equally appropriate to both provocative avant-garde explorations and the laid back swagger of hard bop.

The work of composing rehearsing, and performing Double Arc took place in November, 2013. Now, more than a year and a half later, I am writing the liner notes to complete the last aspect of the project. The extended distance in time between the recording and mixing/mastering of the musi gave me a different perspective toward the material than I have for most albums. Working on now — 19 months after the performance was documented at the Manggha Culture Center in Krakow — what strikes me most is that this piece seems to be my Pierrot le Fou.

Piano-Drums Duos are the preferred playing arrangement of pianist Irène Schweizer. Her mastery of duets with important drummers of contemporary jazz are documented on numerous Intakt CDs. Han Bennink, Pierre Favre, Louis Moholo, Günter Baby Sommer, Andrew Cyrille and Joey Baron among them. The Chicago drummer Hamid Drake, born in 1955, and Irène Schweizer, born in 1941, have performed together on numerous occasions both in Europe and Chicago. Together they have appeared on the Intakt CD "Irène Schweizer-Fred Anderson-Hamid Drake". At the 40th anniversary festival "Kontrontationen in Nickelsdorf" (Austria), Schweizer and Drake were the highlight of the event. A celebration of the moment and a declaration of love to South African songs along with their thrilling energy and rhythmic lightness produced a firework of improvisation. A parade of successful interplay. The CD Celebration is released on the occasion of Irène Schweizer's 80th birthday (2. Juni), accompanied by a catalogue of the pianist's works on Intakt Records.

The new Resonance Ensemble album, "Head Above Water, Feet Out Of The Fire," was released to coincide with the group's residency in Krakow from the 18th to the 24th of November this year. I returned home last week with a number of the recordings, and all the donors who directly backed the release of this double cd should be receiving their copies in the next week (depending a bit on what part of the world they live in). As originally indicated, the album includes the live performance from Hasselt, Belgium recorded in March of 2012, plus the studio session that took place before then band's performance at the Chicago Jazz Festival in August last year.

Live In London, the follow-up to her acclaimed debut The Chicago Project, features her UK band including pianist Robert Mitchell, bassist Tom Mason, and drummer Chris Vatalaro of Antibalas. Recorded live at the Vortex Jazz Club in early 2009 by BBC Radio 3, Roberts takes us on an autobiographical tale of her music heritage, peers, and future.

Hamid, William and I have made 3 records prior to this one.”Remember to forget” and “Ultima” were recorded during our first Scandinavian tour in October 1997. “The other side” was a studio recording from Chicago during our North-American tour in January 2000. And “On Reade Street” was recorded in New York, January 2006. Hamid and William are two very nice people who also play their music very well. I think my fascination for their art partly lies in the fact that they have played a lot together. They have a certain thing they bring to the table and it?s quite a challenge both to go with it and also to go against it because it?s a very strong thing and it?s very personal. They will sometimes invite me into territories that I normally stay away from – the jazz thing. To me, this is both frightening and exciting. I feel like walking on the edge with one foot in open air! Frode Gjerstad

Dan Phillips' Chicago Edge Feat Hamid Drake, Mars Williams, Jeb Bishop, and Krzysztof Pabian. Chicago has justly earned its high esteem amongst jazz & creative music aficionados. The city that fostered the talents of the AACM, Sun Ra, Fred Anderson, and many more has been kept alive by figures such as Ken Vandermark, Dave Rempis, Michael Zerang and many more. Some of the city's brightest lights appear on the new album Chicago Edge Ensemble, led by former Chicago resident, guitarist Dan Phillips. Phillips couldn't have picked a more pure cast of musicians to capture and pay tribute to the city he loves - legends Mars Williams (saxophone), Hamid Drake (drums), Jeb Bishop (trombone), and Krysztof Pabian (bass) all contribute in making Chicago Edge Ensemble's Decaying Orbit a rather memorable disc; one ripe with the urgent music which has come to characterize the city's identity.
