Four Decades of Folk Rock is an expansive box set, allowing one disc and over an hour of music for each decade. For those who would argue that folk-rock was primarily a 1960s phenomenon in the United States and a '60s and '70s phenomenon in Britain, the box counters that the musical strains of folk-rock have informed everyone from R.E.M. to the Bangles to David Gray. It's unlikely, though, that anyone but record shop nerds and music historians will be very interested in the debate. For everyone else, the set will be measured by the quality of the music itself, and on that account, Four Decades delivers a remarkable set list.

2017 collection from the British merry music makers. Madness continue to cement their position as the UK's favorite band, with their House Of Common and House Of Fun events becoming annual fixtures in every fan's calendar. Madness are national treasures, with a huge following. Their shows consistently sell out and sales of their current album confirm that, after nearly 40 years, they are still as relevant as they ever were. The last Madness best-of, Total Madness, was released in 2012 and comprised 23 singles. Since then the band have released two more studio albums: Oui Oui, Si Si, Ja Ja, Da Da and their current record, Can't Touch Us Now, each spawning three or four singles. Full House is a best-of and then some, featuring 42 of the band's very best songs, including the hit singles from all of their records (including the above), plus a few of the band's favorite album tracks. It is a joy to listen to; in mostly chronological order, the set charts the highlights of their career, from 1979's 'The Prince' to 2017's 'Another Version Of Me', with smash hit singles like 'Our House' and 'It Must Be Love' nestling in between.

2011 is the centenary of Robert Johnson's birth and in addition it was in 1941 that Muddy Waters first recorded on Stovall's Cotton Plantation in Mississippi. This has given the opportunity to create a campaign spearheaded by a 2-CD compilation tracing the impact and influence of the blues on popular music. There is no defining blues, nor jazz, nor any pigeon-holing. Blues, as much as any music, is produced by performers in the right frame of mind. Whether this is based on love, passion, despair, anguish, bereavement, joblessness, substance abuse, jail, frustration, happiness, self-expression, community spirit, I don't know. Who cares as long as the output is stunning? Blues is certainly from the heart and soul.This compilation extends the so-called 'traditional' ground roots music to more modern interpretations. The 12 bar format has been revamped. The emotion is still there.

Two CD set. Original soundtrack to the 2018 documentary about Madness saxophonist Lee Thompson. Includes tracks from Madness, Crunch, 'Thommosina Leigh', Ian Dury, and the Lee Thompson Ska Orchestra. Lee "Kix" Thompson is a most unlikely character. Early career choices had him spend a year in a detention center. He still hasn't found the receipt for his first saxophone. Luckily, he met two other unlikely characters: Mike Barso Barson and Chrissy Boy Foreman who shared his interests of graffiti, train hopping and music.
