Smokey Robinson wrote those words in 1971. They were written in admiration of - and out of respect for - his soon-to-be erstwhile colleagues the Miracles, whose elegant vocal backups had graced many of Robinson's compositions during the previous decade and a half. In these simple words - and whether or not he fully realised he was doing so at the time - Smokey was also paying tribute to an important, even indispensible, sub-genre of American black music, and to the multitude of other exceptional vocal outfits that have enhanced that sub-genre since the mid 60s. "It's midnight, lights off, clothes off, candles glowing, incense is fading away, don't need no electricity, baby, I'll be your amplifier, 'cause we can boogie in the dark'" - and so pioneer San Francisco disc jockey Voco introduced himself every Saturday night at midnight, while proceeding to expand the musical palette of his stoned audience. KSAN was the first radio station to bring "hippie music" to SF area listeners, a large and devoted following whom the laid-back Armenian DJ introduced to an eclectic mix of blues, funk, and world music, until 6 A.M. rolled around and the tired heads rolled into bed. In 1972 Voco convinced Blue Thumb to release a double concept album based on his radio show, and gathered together some incredible musicians from the Bay area as contributors. Lights Out: San Francisco, subtitled "Voco Presents the Soul of the Bay Area" is an excellent overview of the diverse and exciting San Francisco music scene in the early '70s…

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears - Backlash (2017)  Music

On his fifth album, 2017's Backlash, Black Joe Lewis takes a few steps forward and a few steps back. After dropping the band name the Honeybears (but without dropping the band itself) on 2013's Electric Slave, Lewis is once again using the group moniker. And, as if to further reassure folks that Lewis is still fronting a first-class soul revue, the performances on Backlash sound especially taut and emphatic, with horn players Derek Phelps (trumpet) and Joseph Woullard (baritone sax) making the most of the band's rough-and-ready grooves.

An interesting, although quite erratic, album from their wealth of late-'60s releases. The Revue was featured in various concert performances ranging from inspired to ragged and loose. Tina Turner was at her rampaging, husky best, and at times Ike Turner had the band whipped to a frenzy behind her. At other times they sounded completely unrehearsed and awkward, while Tina just kept plowing on ahead, undeterred by the chaos behind her.

"Ice Cream Castle" is a 1984 album by The Time. Similar to their previous two albums, this album consists of six tracks in the funk-pop or ballad genre and it was produced and arranged by Prince as "The Starr ★ Company". The album's two biggest hits, "Jungle Love" and "The Bird", were featured in the film Purple Rain and this, along with Day's performance in the movie, catapulted the album up the charts and to a crossover audience. Unfortunately, the band didn't have time to enjoy the success, as they had disbanded by the time the movie was released. Ice Cream Castle produced three singles: "Ice Cream Castles", "Jungle Love", and "The Bird".
