The four members of GQ Emmanuel Rahiem LeBlanc, Keith "Sabu" Crier, Herb Lane, and Paul Service first recorded as the Rhythm Makers for Vigor Records. Their smash "Disco Nights (Rock Freak)" was first recorded on Vigor as "Soul on Your Side"; the track is identical, but a new title and lyrics were added to cash in on the disco craze. "Disco Nights" topped the R&B charts for two weeks in 1970. LeBlanc first recorded at the tender age of 13 with a group he formed called Sons of Darkness. GQ was self-contained and wrote most of the material on this LP, except for A Taste of Honey's "Boogie Oogie Oogie" and Billy Stewart's classic "I Do Love You," which nearly went to number one also. "It's Your Love" is a beautiful, airy-sounding ballad that is uniquely arranged; the enthusiastic, positive message of "Make My Dream a Reality" will have you disco dancing to its lively beats and urgent, pleading vocals.

In June this year (2004), Riccardo Chailly stepped down as music director of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, to be succeeded by Mariss Jansons. Chailly's last appearances in Amsterdam exemplified his range as a conductor - there was a new production of Verdi's Don Carlo for Netherlands Opera, running in parallel with performances of Mahler's Ninth Symphony in the orchestra's home at the Concertgebouw itself.

Finally Dutch conductor Eduard van Beinum is receiving attention he so richly deserves with many of his superb performances appearing on CD. Philips has issued most of his commercial recordings for that label, available mostly in Holland. Dutton Laboratories, LYS and Japanese Decca also have issued a number of recordings (with many yet unissued—see our Features article on Van Beinum). Now we have this set of live concert performances dating from 1935 through 1958. The earliest are from 78 rpm acetates some of which were not in very good condition. Some, not all, have surface disturbances even the most precise digital processing cannot eliminate. However, for the collector this is relatively insignificant considering these remarkable performances.

Stacey Lynn Swain had one gigantic hit and one semi-hit in the form of "Two Of Hearts" and "We Connect" respectively and she attempted to have more success with her second album. "Don't Make A Fool Of Yourself" is the 1988 single under Swain's nom de plume, Stacey Q, released in support of her album Hard Machine. It wasn't as popular as "Two Of Hearts" but it kept her on the airwaves for awhile. This American CD5 was released to radio by Atlantic, featuring three mixes of the song, including a remix by Shep Pettibone.

Some 15 years ago, the hitherto unknown 'Carlo G Manuscript' was purchased at a Vienna jumble sale for the princely sum of 60 Euros. Once a doctoral thesis has been prepared based on this document and it had been made available on the internet in the form of scanned images, the manuscript was sold by Sotheby s at auction to an anonymous buyer in 2007, as a consequence of which it has once again disappeared.

Again we are indebted to NM Classics for another volume (the second) in their Anthology of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra series. This one covers the period 1950-1960 and contains many unusual treasures as well as a number of performances that have already been issued: the fine Daphnis and Chloe with Monteux which currently is available on both Audiophile Classics and Music & Arts, Bruno Walter's Mozart, Mahler and Strauss all of which are available on Music & Arts, and the Brahms concerto with Monteux/Milstein, available on Audiophile Classics and Arioso (as well as a discontinued Tahra set). However, there are many fascinating items here including a number of major additions to Eduard van Beinum's discography. We have Beinum conducting music of Dutch composers Hans Henkemans (1913-1995), Anthony van der Horst (1899-1965), and Matthijs Vermeulen (1888-1967).
