A sealed, unlabeled box sat undisturbed for decades on a shelf in the Grateful Dead’s San Rafael tape vault on Front Street, its contents an enduring mystery, even to those few with access to the vault. All David Lemieux knew about that box when he became the Dead’s archivist was that it contained tapes belonging to Bear—Owsley Stanley, the Dead’s first soundman and architect of the Wall of Sound. Even in the Dead Heads’ Holy of Holies, the taped-up box was tantalizing. But this was Bear’s personal property, and so he didn’t touch the box out of an abiding respect for the elder luminary of sound. Bear’s archive of Sonic Journal recordings had been kept safe for him for years within the Grateful Dead’s vault—over 1,300 reels of tape stored in heavy-duty cartons like old banana boxes. At any time, David could have popped the tops and explored them to his archivist heart's content. But they were off-limits without the nod from Bear.

From the Mars Hotel is the seventh studio album (eleventh overall) by rock band the Grateful Dead. It was mainly recorded in April 1974, and released on June 27, 1974. It was the second album by the band on their own Grateful Dead Records label. From the Mars Hotel came less than one year after their previous album, Wake of the Flood, and was the last before the band's then-indefinite hiatus from live touring which began in October 1974. It was voted number 556 in the third edition of Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums (2000).

As John Peel so rightly says Hollywood Festival and the arrival of the Grateful Dead for their first performance in the UK was a defining moment. The late sixties / early seventies counter culture and music scene in the UK had always aspired to West Coast USA bands and their ideology of large outdoor concerts.

It’s been said before but April ‘78 was an incredible month for the Dead. Like May ‘77, you could throw a dart and guarantee you hit a stellar show. - KyloRensPecs, r/gratefuldead, Reddit …. April/May '78 has a lot of the same qualities of Spring '77 but with some extra edge and a much bigger sound from the Rhythm Devils. A really special era that often gets neglected. - viewtiful_alan, r/gratefuldead, Reddit Sportatorium - April 7, 1978 when drums started I thought, oh s*#!, i hate drum solos and Billy and Mickey stopped me in my tracks. Wow, these guys are really good. Little did I know the pervasive influence this phenomena would have on my life. - pearlybakerbest, Dead.net. Huntington Civic Centre, West Virginia – 16 April 1978 This is another must-hear concert by The Grateful Dead. The sound and mix are almost ‘absolutely perfect'… It’s difficult to pick out highlights because everything is played so well; the band are tight, Donna is great and the set list is strong. - Grateful Ted, gratefulted.co.uk

Anthem of the Sun is the second studio album by the Grateful Dead, released in 1968. It is the first album to feature second drummer Mickey Hart, who joined the band in September 1967. In 2003, the album was ranked number 287 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Drummer Bill Kreutzmann's description of the production process succinctly describes the listening experience of the unique album as well: "…Jerry [Garcia] and Phil [Lesh] went into the studio with [Dan] Healy and, like mad scientists, they started splicing all the versions together, creating hybrids that contained the studio tracks and various live parts, stitched together from different shows, all in the same song - one rendition would dissolve into another and sometimes they were even stacked on top of each other…It was easily our most experimental record, it was groundbreaking in its time, and it remains a psychedelic listening experience to this day."

So much more than just the archetypal jam band, the Grateful Dead grew to become an artistic and cultural institution that existed entirely on their own terms. While the band initially came out of a psychedelic revolution in the Bay Area's musically and chemically exploratory mid-'60s, they quickly evolved from their acid rock beginnings, incorporating elements of Americana and Bakersfield country into gently majestic albums like 1970's American Beauty.

Narrowing down the Grateful Dead's touring career and live performances to 60 CDs, 20 venues, and more than 450 songs is hard enough. Narrowing THAT down for 3CD and 6LP sets is a monumental undertaking, but with so much great music to select from, it's one of the most enjoyable compilations we've ever assembled. This nearly four hour collection contains one song (or two, or three…) from every show in the Dead's new road tripping boxed set, ENJOYING THE RIDE, which brings together music from 20 (21…) of the most essential venues in Grateful Dead and Dead Head history. This compilation is crafted with songs spanning the 25 years in the boxed set, 1969-1994. Drawn from such iconic venues as Red Rocks, Frost Amphitheatre, Greek Theatre, Fillmores East and West, Madison Square Garden, Alpine Valley, and many more, THE MUSIC NEVER STOPPED features such classics as "Truckin'," "Eyes Of The World," "Scarlet Begonias," the title track, and plenty of under the radar tracks like "Big Boy Pete," "My Brother Esau," and "Doin' That Rag." This is a career-defining live collection filled with some of the greatest tracks performed at their greatest venues. - David Lemieux

The Grateful Dead battled the elements in July 1989, enduring drenching rains and stifling humidity during back-to-back shows at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in the nation’s capital. In spite of the bleak weather, the band thrilled the massive crowds both nights with triumphant performances that rank among the very best of a busy year that included 74 shows and the release of the group’s final studio album, BUILT TO LAST.

In the Dark is the 12th studio album by the Grateful Dead. It was recorded in one week in January 1987, and originally released on July 6, 1987. In the Dark was the band's first album in six years, and its first studio album since 1980's Go to Heaven. It became unexpectedly popular, achieving double platinum certification in the U.S. It reached #6 on the Billboard 200 chart, the Grateful Dead's only top ten album. The peppy "Touch of Grey" peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100, the band's only top forty single; it also became a frequently played music video on MTV. "Hell in a Bucket" and "Throwing Stones" (for which videos were also made) also achieved significant album-oriented rock radio airplay.
