Gary Moore - one of rock's most underrated guitarists (both from a technical and compositional point of view), Gary Moore remains relatively unknown in the U.S., while his solo work has brought him substantial acclaim and commercial success in most other parts of the world – especially in Europe. Born on April 4, 1952, in Belfast, Ireland, Moore became interested in guitar during the '60s, upon discovering such blues-rock masters as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and perhaps his biggest influence of all, Fleetwood Mac's Peter Green.

This album is a jaw-dropping affair for anyone who believes that Eddie Van Halen is the ultimate guitar-shredding experience. Gary Moore's classic live album We Want Moore! is about as good as it gets. Drawing mainly from the Irish guitarist's previous two studio albums, every cut gets a shot in the arm from Moore's extended soloing, most notably the Yardbird's "Shapes of Things" at almost nine minutes. Recorded in places as distant as Tokyo, Glasgow and Detroit, the performances also benefit from the impressive vocal tag team between Moore and rhythm guitarist Neil Carter.

By the late '90s, guitarist Gary Moore was at a career crossroads. Should he continue on the path that brought him his biggest stateside success (Still Got the Blues), or try something a bit contemporary? The ex-Thin Lizzy member decided on the latter, issuing Dark Days in Paradise, an album that saw Moore utilize electronic beats and, of course, his trademark soaring guitar work, rather than blues-rockers. And you have to give the guitarist credit – he does venture outside of what you'd usually expect from a new Moore album, whether it be the Beatlesque "One Fine Day" (which contains a bassline quite similar to the Fab Four's "Rain") or the keyboard-heavy ballad "Like Angels" (which sounds like it's straight from 1987). While fans of Victims of the Future may be left wondering where the hard rock went, Dark Days in Paradise will be an interesting listen for fans curious to hear Moore trying new approaches.

There´s no doubt that Gary Moore is considered to be one of the greatest rock guitarists ever, he will be missed for each day that passes by. It has already been 3 years since he died of a heart attack in his sleep during a vacation in Spain. There are some box set´s available with Gary Moore but this one is by far the best, with 5 of his greatest hard rock albums between 1982-1989. I only miss Back on the streets from 1978 and Dirty fingers from 1983 but I can´t complain, these 5 included are his best solo albums.

There have been quite a few different compilations of Gary Moore's albums; from very weak to mediocre, and maybe one or two better ones. This compilation is a selection of albums from the rock era (even though he hated it, and especially the hard rock/metal label that was stuck on it.) He thought he could find a way out of this by starting to play blues. Which I wouldn't recommend. It's a shame that the big labels (or the people working there) weren't able to put together such strong material.
