Moments of Genesis are as spooky and arty as those on Abacab – in particular, there's the tortured howl of "Mama," uncannily reminiscent of Phil Collins' Face Value, and the two-part "Second Home by the Sea" – but this eponymous 1983 album is indeed a rebirth, as so many self-titled albums delivered in the thick of a band's career often are. Here the art rock functions as coloring to the pop songs, unlike on Abacab and Duke, where the reverse is true…

Genesis were an English Rock band formed at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey in 1967. The most commercially successful and longest-lasting line-up consisted of keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford and drummer/singer Phil Collins. Significant former members were guitarist Steve Hackett and original lead singer Peter Gabriel. The band underwent many changes in musical style over its career, from folk music to progressive rock in the 1970s, before moving towards pop at the end of the decade. They have sold 21.5 million RIAA-certified albums in the United States and their worldwide sales are estimated to be between 100 million and 150 million. All of the group's studio work since signing to Charisma has been remastered and re-released in 2007 as SACD, except their debut album (due the copyright issue).

Genesis started life as a progressive rock band, in the manner of Yes and King Crimson, before a series of membership changes brought about a transformation in their sound, into one of the most successful pop/rock bands of the 1980s and 1990s. In addition, the group has provided a launching pad for the superstardom of members Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, and star solo careers for members Tony Banks, Michael Rutherford, and Steve Hackett…

"Genesis" is the 12th studio album by Genesis. It was recorded and released in 1983. Most fans, as well as the band themselves, refer to this album as the "Mama" album. In some cases, notably amongst the Genesis online community, it has been referred to as the "Shapes" or "Gold Shapes" album because of the front cover artwork.

Genesis spread their music over four decades. Founded originally by singer Peter Gabriel, they quickly gained a following and began to ride the wave of progressive rock. Peter Gabriel later left to begin a brilliant solo career, he was replaced by drummer Phil Collins as the group continued to be very successful. Collins also later left the group to start his own impressive solo journey, but Genesis kept going and continued producing music. Genesis have a rich discography with many famous tracks, which are full of variation and complex changes in structure and tempo. They were also able to write simpler songs which took them to the top of the Charts without affecting their ambitions style. Take a stroll through the different stages of one of the biggest bands ever with this Genesis playlist. Photo © Genesis 1974

"This sounds bigger, more luscious, more layering of the keyboards. .. the drums really do sound an awful lot better. Where there are guitars in the mix, they're picked out better. I said this is probably 95% of ways this is better. I think you could almost say 50% of that is Collins's vocal because it is a great vocal performance on this record and on this and on all of the tracks his vocal is richer. Fuller, more colorful, and more expressive." — Dave Denyer
