Alongside his close friend and frequent collaborator Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings was at the forefront of the 1970s outlaw country movement that sought to upset the apple cart of Nashville norms. Seeds of rebellion had begun to take root during the latter part of the previous decade, however, while the Texan troubadour was, to the outside world, still a clean-cut figure playing Music City’s traditional game.

Leo Blokhuis is an award winning author and music journalist familiar to Dutch TV audiences as host of a prime time music show ‘Top 2000 a Gogo’. In his latest ‘sound book’ he writes of the period in the 60s and 70s when soul and country music traditions married together to create country soul and vice versa. The book part is 176 pages of Dutch text and since my near neighbours language is not one of the main languages that I can read I am unable to comment on Blokhuis’ writing skills. What I can say is that the text is interspersed with photographs of significant artists, record labels and a page on each featured song that lists studio details and participating musicians. Clearly a labour of love the book looks great and feels substantial.

Vikki Carr is a three-time Grammy Award winner, whose international success spans four decades. She has performed for the Queen, five United States Presidents, wartime soldiers in Vietnam and sold-out audiences around the world. She has worked in radio, television, film and theatre. The diversity of her rich voice is impressive. She can belt out the blues or touch the heart with a soft romantic ballad. Frank Sinatra said, "She possesses my kind of voice," Dean Martin called her "the best girl singer in the business," and Bing Crosby and Ella Fitzgerald both named her among their three favorite female singers of all time. This new box set highlights the very best of her singing talents. Vikki has helped compile the set and included are some very rare recordings, some previously unreleased songs as well as her hits, some foreign language songs and some classic standards.

Though among the most masterful of all popular musicians, bluegrass artists have had difficulty crossing over to a larger audience. Twenty years after Alison Krauss and her angelic voice broke through the pickin' and grinnin' ceiling with her cover of "Baby, Now That I've Found You," the massively talented Molly Tuttle is poised to do the same.
