Since the release of the first volume, (Piano Concerto and Symphony, BIS-SACD-1191), in February 2003, this series has been gathering the most extravagant praise, both for the committed performances of Ole Kristian Ruud and the Bergen Philharmonic – Grieg's 'own' orchestra – and for the sound quality, which has been held up as a model for all labels making orchestral Surround Sound recordings. With this, the sixth, instalment the turn has come to the Peer Gynt Suites, possibly the best-loved of all Grieg's orchestral music.

Andrés Isasi’s youthful promise can be heard in the easy romance of his Grieg and Dvořák influenced String Quartet No 0. This falls outside the numbered sequence of his quartets but retained the composer’s affection and was never withdrawn from circulation. Given its première performance by the Isasi Quartet in 2010, the substantial String Quartet No 2 is more symphonic in manner, and Isasi re-used movements in orchestral works such as the Suite No 2. This is the first of three volumes of Isasi’s complete string quartets.

Kun-Woo Paik made his debut at age ten performing Grieg’s Piano Concerto with the Korean National Orchestra. At 15 he moved to New York to study with Rosina Lhévinne at The Juilliard School, and he also studied in London, with Ilona Kabos, and in Italy, with Guido Agosti and Wilhelm Kempff. His international career took off following his first New York appearance, performing Ravel’s complete piano works at Lincoln Center, as well as his orchestral debut at Carnegie Hall.
