Just pure, sweet, beautiful music from start to finish on this album. My favourite song is Moonza, full of soul and funk, jazzy and brilliant. In truth, all of the songs on this album are beautifully crafted and utterly joyful. That these two superb musicians only made one album together is a shame but what they did make will forever stand the test of time… they really do not make music like this anymore.

One of the most successful instrumental performers in pop history, trumpeter Herb Alpert was also one of the entertainment industry's shrewdest businessmen: A&M, the label he co-founded with partner Jerry Moss, ranks among the most prosperous artist-owned companies ever established. Born March 31, 1935, in Los Angeles, Alpert began playing the trumpet at the age of eight. After serving in the Army, he attempted to forge an acting career, but soon returned to music, recording under the name Dore Alpert for RCA.

With this album, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass settle into their hitmaking groove, the once strikingly eclectic elements of Dixieland, pop, rock, and mariachi becoming more smoothly integrated within Alpert's infectious "Ameriachi" blend. They sound more like a band; along with Alpert's now-indelibly stamped trumpet sound, you can recognize jazzman John Pisano's distinctive rhythm guitar, Lou Pagani's piano, the droll Bob Edmondson's dulcet trombone, etc…

Herbert "Herb" Alpert (born March 31, 1935) is an American musician most associated with the group variously known as Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass or TJB. He is also a recording industry executive — he is the "A" of A&M Records (a recording label he and business partner Jerry Moss founded and eventually sold). Born in Los Angeles, California to a Jewish family, Alpert began trumpet lessons at about the age of eight and played at dances as a teenager. Acquiring an early wire recorder in high school, he experimented with recording on this crude equipment. After graduating from Fairfax High School in 1952, he joined the U.S. Army and frequently performed at military ceremonies. After his service in the Army, Alpert tried his hand at acting, but eventually settled on pursuing a career in music. While attending the University of Southern California in the 1950s, he was a member of the USC Trojan Marching Band for two years.

Joyful, romantic sounds that stir the soul: that’s the overarching theme of Herb Alpert's ‘Music Vol. 1’, the trumpeter and composers’ new work. Alpert's passion for timeless melodies takes the listener on a voyage that spans genres and generations with surprising twists and turns. Always exploring and bursting with creativity, he teamed with GRAMMY-winning producer Jochem van der Saag (whose credits include Andrea Bocelli and Destiny's Child) for the first time, crafting ‘Music Vol. 1’ at Van Der Saag's home studio over the past year.

With 1992's "Midnight Sun", released on his own label, Herb Alpert indulges himself with vintage standards. A strong jazz feel imbues the relaxed atmosphere. The soloist's treatments of "All the Things You Are" create a cool and mellow version of the Hammerstein-Kern classic. Alpert reprises his 1965 hit, "A Taste of Honey", with a blue jazz feeling. After pop concerns dominating his work for the previous 30 years, it's refreshing to hear this album of timeless songs. „Midnight Sun“ is not so much concerned with finding a hit through today's trends but rediscovering an appreciation of the great music that's been forgotten.

Though trumpet legend Herb Alpert and wife Lani Hall have been together for more than three decades, it's hard to believe that Anything Goes is their very first album together. A musician and entrepreneur, Alpert is best known for his work in the 1960s with his Tijuana Brass, five number one hits, eight Grammy Awards and fifteen gold albums. As co-founder of A&M Records, Alpert's impact on music has been even greater. ~ AllAboutJazz
