While watching this 21-song concert by Ian Hunter & His Rant Band, one is struck by the DVD's great sound – superb clarity on "I Wish I Was Your Mother," "Knees of My Heart," and the other 19 tunes (the British label Snapper wisely deciding to release the audio on a separate disc entitled The Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nuthin' But the Truth for those who prefer CD). "23A Swan Hill" rocks harder than its appearance on another recent DVD, Strings Attached, and is classic Mott the Hoople-style angst rock accompanied by great backing vocals, long camera shots, and colorful close-ups on the DVD. The Rant Band are superb, Steve Holley from Paul McCartney's Wings, journeyman Andy York, Kinks keyboardist Ian Gibbons, the Look's Gus Goad on bass, and fellow Hoople Mick Ralphs bringing his magic back to Hunter's repertoire.

Wouldn't you have guessed it?? After returning to a Purple song format in Scarabus, that Ian Gillan and his band would go on to return to live "old glory" moments in the Budokan theatre in Tokyo, where the Japanese crowds are sooooo easy to please and way over-appreciative. Recorded after the band's Scarabus album, I suspect this was probably among the last gig of the IGB well that band with that line-up)

Ian Gillan became dissatisfied with the final mixes of the album and this delayed its eventual release. What eventually became the album Clear Air Turbulence was remixed at Kingsway before release, but the original mix had taken place at Rockfield Studios in Wales. In 1997 the original mix was released by Angel Air Records under the title The Rockfield Mixes. The Rockfield Mixes represents a cleaner (or at least earlier) version of the album. It also includes an extra track which didn't make it to the original release.

As a solo artist, Ian Gillan had his share of fine moments in the studio, but it was on-stage where he was at his best – a fact underscored by Live at the Budokan. First released as a two-LP set in 1982 and reissued on a single CD in the early '90s, Budokan boasts strong extended versions of Purple classics like "Smoke on the Water," "Woman from Tokyo," and the moody ballad "Child in Time," as well as some songs he'd recorded for his solo projects, including "Clear Air Turbulence," "Money Lender," and "Over the Hill." The CD's liner notes are atrocious (no personnel are listed), but the performances themselves – though not in a class with Purple's Made in Japan – are generally impressive. If you acquire only one of Gillan's post-Purple recordings, this would be the best choice.

Forty-some years into his life as a verified metal god, it probably seemed like as good a time as any for Rob Halford to make a Christmas album. As the singer for Judas Priest, Halford's distinctive and versatile voice screamed, growled and wheezed through some of the most recognizable hard rock anthems of all time. Instantly recognizable, Halford's singing came to embody all the danger, rebellion, and hedonism that heavy metal itself strived for. There's an hefty dose of self-awareness and irony in Celestial, a collection of metalized Christmas carols and traditional holiday tunes, and a few Halford originals in the holiday vein. The raging and sinister "Donner and Blitzen" is one such original, and its over-the-top production, heavy-handed delivery, and retro riffing come dangerously close to parody.

After leaving Deep Purple in June 1973, Ian Gillan had retired from the music business to pursue other business ventures, including motorcycle engines, a country hotel / restaurant (with a guitar shaped swimming pool), and ownership of the Kingsway Recorders studio, where from April 1974 he began to work on his first post-Deep Purple solo tracks…

Most listeners will identify Ian Gillan as the main vocal force behind the classic Deep Purple albums of the early '70s: Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, Who Do We Think We Are, and Made in Japan. Gillan's off-and-on relationship with the band has allowed him plenty of time to pursue solo work.
