Stephen Dwoskin (born 1939) is an accomplished experimental filmmaker who contracted polio as a child in New York City. This progressively affected his mobility. He is now a wheelchair user. He studied at Parsons School of Design and at New York University, receiving a Fulbright Scholarship to move to London in 1964, where is he still based. He was a co-founder of the London Film-Makers' Co-op. In 1967-1968 he won the Solvey Prize at the Knokke Experimental Film Festival in Belgium for a series of short films which established his reputation. Screenings of his films have been worldwide including Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam, Toronto, Lucarno, Pesaro, Mannheim, Oberhausen, Sydney, Melbourne, Hamburg, San Francisco, Turin, Riga, Madrid, Barcelona, and Benalmadena. He is also a maker of documentaries: 'Face of Our Fear', one of the films he made to address attitudes to disabilities, was broadcast on Channel Four, UK in 1992. Awards include L'Age d'or prize, Brussels Film Festival 1982.

Documentarian Nikolaus Geyrhalter travels to Pripyat, the town in which the workers of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant lived prior to the disaster of 1986, examining with striking black and white photography the decaying remnants of the abandoned environment, meeting with those who make their living in the area and the few stubborn, elderly residents who still refuse to leave their homes, in this restrained yet very powerful documentary.

Hungarian auteur Bela Tarr's seven-hour, black-and-white epic based on the novel by Laszlo Karsznahorkai took two years to film. The complex story follows a group of people living in a dilapidated village in post-communist Hungary. Tarr examines their standstill lives through a series of episodes told from each person's point-of-view. Susan Sontag wrote, "Devastating, enthralling for every minute of its seven hours. I'd be glad to see it every year for the rest of my life." Winner of the Caligari Film Prize and the Ecumenical Jury Prize Special Mention at the 1994 Berlin International Film Festival.

On her debut, Hayley Westenra, a 16-year-old singing sensation from New Zealand, endures the inevitable comparisons to Charlotte Church, but it's the impression she's made that's placed her in such lofty company. And not many fledgling artists can boast of having the legendary George Martin contribute songs and arrangements to their album. PURE might be the best description of her singing - crystal clear and devoid of mannerisms. It's not simply the beauty of her voice that impresses, however, but how effectively she uses it. The precocious soprano demonstrates the poise, versatility, and musical instincts of a seasoned pro. Westenra moves gracefully through a program made up primarily of Euro - pop ballads but also includes arrangements of well - known classical melodies, as well as a pair of Maori songs. Highlights include affecting renditions of "In Trutina" from Carl Orff's 'Carmina Burana' and the traditional spiritual "Amazing Grace." The young, handsome, but somewhat wild Eugene Morgan wants to marry Isabel Amberson, daughter of a rich upper-class family, but she instead marries dull and steady Wilbur Minafer. Their only child, George, grows up a spoiled brat. Years later, Eugene comes back, now a mature widower and a successful automobile maker. After Wilbur dies, Eugene again asks Isabel to marry him, and she is receptive. But George resents the attentions paid to his mother, and he and his whacko aunt Fanny manage to sabotage the romance. A series of disasters befall the Ambersons and George, and he gets his come-uppance in the end.
