Over the course of his nearly five decade career, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard established himself as one of the most versatile and inventive jazz musicians of the twentieth century. The Grammy-winning virtuoso appeared on some of the most important albums in the genre, including seminal works by Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Art Blakey, John Coltrane, and countless others. The Artistry Of Freddie Hubbard, his fifth album for Impulse!, is a spellbinding piece of jazz history. Hubbard’s molten lines are augmented by the trombone work of the legendary Curtis Fuller and tenor saxophonist John Gilmore of the Sun Ra Archestra. One of the all-time great jazz records.

This edition contains two amazing original albums by the great Pee Wee Russell. New Groove (Columbia CS-8785) presents him fronting his own quartet accompanied by trombone, and a piano-less rhythm section of bass and drums. The second LP, The College Concert of Pee Wee Russell and Henry Red Allen (Impulse AS-9137), appears here for the first time ever on CD. It features the clarinettist in a quintet format co-led by Allen, backed by an impressive modern rhythm section composed of Steve Kuhn on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Marty Morell on drums. As a bonus, “Mariooch”, which marks the only quartet song featuring Russell from the larger group album Jazz Reunion.

Genre: Jazz | Label: TDK Uk Ltd | Copy: Untouched | Release Date: 31 May 2004 | Runtime: 72 min. | 2,69 GB (DVD5)

This DVD highlights the advantages perfectly: there are loads of camera angles, and the cutting between long views and close ups of Jamal's facial expressions and hand gestures to the others, Heard's fingering and Israel's cymbals really adds to the live jazz experience.
A sorely underexposed figure and a major influence on Miles Davis, pianist Ahmad Jamal isn't generally ranked among the all-time giants of jazz, but he impressed fellow musicians and record buyers alike with his innovative, minimalist approach.

It seems only fitting that the initial new release on the latest revival of the Impulse label features McCoy Tyner and Michael Brecker. When Impulse started out in 1960, John Coltrane and Tyner were the first artists to be signed, and when Impulse was briefly brought back by MCA in the 1980s, two of its most important albums were recordings by Brecker. There are not a lot of surprises on this quartet matchup (with bassist Avery Sharpe and drummer Aaron Scott) except perhaps for how well Tyner and Brecker mesh together.
