Having built a devoted following and one of Americana's proudest discographies, Jason Isbell, who has already recorded several live albums, delivers his solo acoustic tour de force. Foxes in the Snow is a quietly powerful set that proves his songwriting muse shows no signs of deserting him anytime soon. The rising lines of the chorus hook in "Eileen" are supported by his always sharp observations: "It ended like it always ends/ Somebody crying on the phone/ You tell each other you can still be friends/ But you both know you're on your own." Atop a sturdy melody Isbell seems to mix imagination with his publicly shared marital struggles ("And now that I live to see my melodies betray me/ I'm sorry the love songs all mean different things today") in "Gravelweed," whose choruses test the upper limits of his vocal range. There's nowhere for Isbell to hide on these tales, which lays bare his voice and guitar playing.

Jason Isbell has been in the studio this winter working on his follow-up to 2015’s fantastic Something More Than Free. That record is almost done, and Isbell has even begun teasing an announcement on his website. In the meantime, Isbell just announced that he and his band, The 400 Unit, will be releasing a covers EP for Record Store Day in April. The EP is called Live from Welcome to 1979 and was reportedly recorded live and “directly onto lacquer” at Nashville’s Welcome to 1979 studio. Release tracks include “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” and “Sway” (both originally performed by The Rolling Stones), John Prine’s “Storm Windows,” Candi Staton’s “Heart on a String,” Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City,” and Drive-By Truckers’ “Never Gonna Change.”

The debut album from accomplished guitarist and songwriter Jason Isbell, formerly of Drive By Truckers (DBT), is reissued with 4 unreleased tracks from the original recording sessions. The addition of those 4 extra songs finds Sirens Of The Ditch clocking in at 15 total tracks. Sirens Of The Ditch's mystical quality can be partially attributed to the FAME recording studio (Aretha Franklin, Duane Allman, Otis Redding) in Isbell’s hometown of Muscle Shoals, AL where the album was recorded.
