Tony Grey is part of a new fraternity of extraordinary young electric bass guitar virtuosos (along with Matthew Garrison, Hadrien Feraud) who have taken the vocabulary of pioneers like Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke to the next level. The British-born bassist, a Berklee College of Music grad, has played on recordings by John McLaughlin (2006′s Industrial Zen) and the Japanese keyboard wiz Hiromi Uehra (2004′s Brain, 2006′s Spiral and 2007′s Time Control). On Chasing Shadows, his second recording as a leader (he previously released the self-produced Moving through his own website), Grey steps out in impressive fashion as a bandleader, accomplished composer and outstanding soloist.
The folk music of Georgia is one of the earliest and richest polyphonic traditions in the world, despite being little known to the rest of the modern world. Combining a sense of national pride, musical invention and exploratory spirit, pianist/composer & arranger Giorgi Mikadze has created a striking new hybrid of traditional Georgian folk music and progressive microtonal jazz on his breathtaking debut album, Georgian Microjamz. This album discovers unexpected common ground between the ancient traditions of Mikadze’s native Georgia, where the Orthodox Christian church featured only vocal music in its services, and the very modern microtonal innovations of guitar great David “Fuze” Fiuczynski, with whom the keyboardist studied while at Boston’s Berklee College of Music…
Julian Coryell began playing the guitar at the tender age of 5, & quickly exhibited a natural talent for the instrument (other instruments as well – piano, bass, & drums to name a few). Son of famed guitarist Larry Coryell, Julian’s musical gifts were nourished & he began writing music at a young age. The Coryell household was never lacking in musical visitors, & Julian was exposed to everyone from Miles Davis to James Taylor, each adding to the mix of influences from which Julian is inspired. Julian entered Berklee college of Music at 16 years old & was the youngest graduate a few years later when he was 18 years old. Since then, he has toured & recorded with numerous platinum artists & has released his own solo records on Universal, Sony, & GRP. Since his early years in Berklee College, Julian has been recording his own music as well as other artists.

When Benin-born guitarist/vocalist Lionel Loueke appeared at this summer's Ottawa International Jazz Festival, he was a real highlight amongst the entire group of stellar young players in trumpeter Terence Blanchard's band. His solo spot, where he used looping and harmonizing devices to create a veritable mini-orchestra with just one voice and guitar, illustrated how technology can be used to create something natural. Jazz Luddites regularly rail against the use of electronics to tarnish the "pure nature of jazz, but Loueke clearly doesn't subscribe to such a narrow view. Technology is only as good as the hands it's in, and an increasing number of artists are finding ways to utilize it to stretch the shape of jazz. Loueke came relatively late to the guitar.
