"Rough And Ready" is an important transitional album for Jeff Beck. Moving away from the amped-up blues of BECK-OLA and presaging the cutting-edge fusion of "Blow By Blow", "Rough And Ready" is a mixture of gutsy, funky R&B, slicing, distortion-heavy rock, and progressive, jazzy flourishes. The addition of keyboardist Max Middleton changes the sound of the Group, hinting at its future fusion experiments, yet vocalist Bob Tench keeps thing firmly grounded with his mainstream-styled blues-rock singing.

To those wondering whether to add this CD to their collection I recommend that you bear in mind Duke Ellington's words - "There are only two kinds of music: good music and bad music", because this CD belongs unquestionably to the first category. All instrumental, it contains a variety of styles - including ballad, reggae, funk, and rock - read the other reviews for the details. And finally, please don't ever pretend to have any inkling of what Jeff Beck is about, or what he is capable of, without being familiar with this particular album.

Released in 1976, Jeff Beck's Wired contains some of the best jazz-rock fusion of the period. Wired is generally more muscular, albeit less-unique than its predecessor, Blow by Blow. Joining keyboardist Max Middleton, drummer Richard Bailey, and producer George Martin from the Blow by Blow sessions are drummer Narada Michael Walden, bassist Wilbur Bascomb, and keyboardist Jan Hammer. Beck contributed no original material to Wired, instead relying on the considerable talents of his supporting cast. Perhaps this explains why Wired is not as cohesive as Blow by Blow, seemingly more assembled from component parts. Walden's powerful drumming propels much of Wired, particularly Middleton's explosive opener, "Led Boots," where Beck erupts into a stunning solo of volcanic intensity. Walden also contributes four compositions, including the funk-infused "Come Dancing," which adds an unnamed horn section. While Walden's "Sophie" is overly long and marred by Hammer's arena rock clichés, his "Play With Me" is spirited and Hammer's soloing more melodic.

STUNNING BLOW BY BLOW PERFORMANCE FROM DETROIT 1975 • Following the demise of Beck, Bogart and Appice in April 1974, Beck entered Underhill Studio and met with the group Upp, whom he recruited as backing band for his appearance on the BBC TV programme Guitar Workshop in August ‘74. Beck produced and played on their self-titled debut album and their second album This Way Upp. In October Beck began to record instrumentals at AIR Studios with Max Middleton, bassist Phil Chen and drummer Richard Bailey, using George Martin as producer and arranger. • Jeff Beck's next solo album Blow by Blow evolved from these sessions and showcased Beck's technical prowess in jazz-rock. The album reached number four in the charts and remains Beck's most commercially successful release. Fastidious about overdubs and often dissatisfied with his solos, he returned regularly to AIR Studios until he was satisfied.

"If the voice don't say it, the guitar will play it," raps Saffron on "Pork-U-Pine," the third track on Jeff Beck's minimally titled Jeff. And he does. Beck teams with producer Andy Wright, the man responsible for his more complete immersion into electronic backdrops on his last outing, You Had It Coming. This time the transition is complete. Beck used electronica first on Who Else!, moved a little more into the fire on You Had It Coming, and here merges his full-on Beck-Ola guitar heaviness with the sounds of contemporary spazz-out big beats and noise.
