Reluctantly dubbed as a supergroup, Chickenfoot (consisting of former Van Halen members Sammy Hagar (vocals) and Michael Anthony (bass), solo musician Joe Satriani (guitar) and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith) released their eponymous debut in early June of 2009. "Chickenfoot III" finds the band fully embracing its history and influences to create an album that plays to every one of its strengths. Whether you're a Van Halen fan looking for something to hold you over until next year, or just a fan of classic hard rock sounds, you're going to find plenty to love here.

It's hard to imagine two albums as different as the pair that Jordan Rudess released during a two-year span – 2002's 4NYC and 2004's Rhythm of Time. While the former is comprised of solo, tranquil compositions, the latter is a full-on modern-day prog metal assault, with a gaggle of special guests contributing to the rock fury (Joe Satriani, Steve Morse, Vinnie Moore, Greg Howe, Rod Morgenstein, Kip Winger, etc.). And while the sounds of Rhythm of Time would provide a perfect soundtrack for a busy city street, Rudess supposedly recorded his parts in seclusion from the outside world over a two-week span. Before playing such over the top tunes as "Time Crunch," "Screaming Head," and "What Four," be sure to strap on your seat belt. There are few keyboardists in rock as technically gifted on their instruments as Dream Theater's Jordan Rudess, and Rhythm of Time proves it once and for all.

This super group’s debut was decent but nothing particularly thrilling. It sounded like a bunch of guys having fun but it didn’t really translate when it came to the songs in my opinion. Well, on Chickenfoot III (they skipped the second album) this very much feels more like a band that has written real songs and not bunch of guys jamming. Because of how underwhelmed the debut left me, I wasn’t sure if I was going to pick this album up. I saw Classic Rock magazine was doing yet another “Fan Pack” release and figured if I ever was going to buy the album that I might as get the album that comes with a magazine. It’s a bit more bare bones than the Alice Cooper release (or even Whitesnake): 132-page 3-D magazine, a pack of 5 Chickenfoot guitar picks and a pair of 3-D glasses.

The Aristocrats by any measure the hottest new band in instrumental rock/fusion today rewrote their own rules for their third studio album, Tres Caballeros. After two fairly raw trio albums, guitarist Guthrie Govan (Steven Wilson, Asia/GPS), bassist Bryan Beller (Joe Satriani, Dethklok) and drummer Marco Minnemann (Steven Wilson, Joe Satriani) set up camp at legendary Sunset Sound studios in Hollywood, CA, where Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and Van Halen all recorded landmark albums. The result: Nine new compositions of greater sonic depth and breadth than ever before, with unique textures and lush layering augmenting the band s preternatural ability to improvise at the highest levels possible.

Jordan Rudess - Rhythm Of Time Magna Carta “Dream Theater,” keyboardist Jordan Rudess and a slew of progressive-rock guitar gods navigate tricky time signatures on this high-flying production. At times, it’s difficult to discern whether it’s Rudess performing his synth lines or guitarists such as Greg Howe and Joe Satriani’s, high-tech – into the ozone – type leads. Essentially, Rudess is a speed demon on the keys. Occasionally, he interjects slick jazz grooves into the mix, but the thrust of this generally, soaring affair is rooted within his polytonal chord progressions, and layered orchestrations. And as we might expect, drummer Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs) handles the difficult pulses with chutzpah along with a whiz-bang approach to dynamics.
