Joe Walsh is first and foremost a very particular guitar sound, ahead of its time during its heyday of the seventies and eighties. Known to the general public for his participation in the Eagles band at the time of Hotel California (1976), Joe Walsh is also the author of a few albums full of finds. From Barnstorm (1972) , to There Goes the Neighborhood (1981), to But Seriously, Folks…(1978), Joe Walsh even achieved a small personal success in the United States. As a guitarist or Producer, Joe Walsh has collaborated with many B. B. artists. King to Richard Marx, or Bruce Springsteen. After twenty years of record silence, Joe Walsh returned in good shape for Analog Man in 2012.

As far as studio albums go, But Seriously Folks is Joe Walsh's most insightful and melodic. But Seriously Folks, released in 1978, was the album the Eagles should have made rather than the mediocre The Long Run. It captures a reflective song cycle along the same thematic lines of Pet Sounds, only for the '70s. The album's introspective outlook glides through rejuvenation ("Tomorrow," "Over and Over"), recapturing the simple pleasures of the past ("Indian Summer"), mid-career indecision ("At the Station," "Second Hand Store"), and a melancholy instrumental ("Theme From Boat Weirdos").

While Universal's budget-priced best-of series, 20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection, is welcome for introducing inexpensive compilations of a wide range of recording artists, it also complicates things for consumers when an act already has one or more collections currently in the marketplace. A good example is Joe Walsh. Walsh originally gained renown in 1969 as a member of the James Gang, which recorded for ABC Records, the catalog for which is now controlled by Universal and released through MCA Records.

The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get is the second album by Joe Walsh and his band Barnstorm, released in 1973, although the album's front cover (right) credits only Walsh. It proved to be his commercial breakthrough, largely on the strength of the Top 40 hit single, "Rocky Mountain Way", which helped propel the album into the Top 10.

Barnstorm, Joe Walsh's first solo album after leaving the James Gang, garnered him fame not only as a guitarist but also as a songwriter. While it's true that Walsh established himself as a late-'60s/early-'70s guitar hero on the Gang's more boogie-oriented rock numbers, it's Walsh's love of lushly textured production and spacy, open-ended songs featuring both acoustic and electric guitars that is showcased here on this wildly adventurous and forgotten, unqualified masterpiece…

"But Seriously, Folks…" is the fourth studio album by Joe Walsh, released in 1978. It included the satirical song "Life's Been Good". The original eight-minute album version of this track was edited down to 4½ minutes for single release and this became Walsh's biggest solo hit, peaking at #12 on the Billboard chart. The album also features the other four members of the Eagles—which Walsh had joined two years earlier—as well as singer-guitarist Jay Ferguson, a former member of the groups Spirit and Jo Jo Gunne (who co-wrote one track on the album), drummer Joe Vitale from Walsh's former band Barnstorm, and bassist Willie Weeks.

Recorded live just before Joe Walsh joined up with the Eagles full-time, You Can't Argue with a Sick Mind contains six of Walsh's better-known songs. Things start off with his last hit with the James Gang, "Walk Away," and then the album makes its way through "Meadows" and 18 minutes of "Rocky Mountain Way." The crowd loved it…
