With his new album To The One (Abstract Logix/Mediastarz), iconic guitarist and composer and 2010 Grammy Winner John McLaughlin looks backwards and forwards simultaneously. The six original songs are hauntingly evocative – with roiling rhythmic swells, modal expanses, and telepathic group interaction echoing the profound influence of John Cotrane’s 1965 spiritual jazz masterpiece A Love Supreme.

Loose and spontaneous, this (mainly) live album is a meeting of three of the greatest guitarists in the world for an acoustic summit the likes of which the guitar-playing community rarely sees. Broken up into three duo and two trio performances, Friday Night in San Francisco catches all three players at the peaks of their quite formidable powers.

Fusion Jazz | MP3 Lame Insane 320 Kbps | RS 102 MB

Could this be the granddaddy of both new age and the world music movement? Fresh from his sojourn with Miles Davis's groundbreaking electric fusion band, guitarist John McLaughlin continued to explore that style with his own explosive electric group, the Mahavishnu Orchestra. However, he also recognized an affinity between jazz and Indian music, and began that investigation…

Recorded in 1991, Que Alegria features the reinvented John McLaughlin Trio with a new bassist, Dominique DiPiazza. And what a bassist he is! His playing sounds facile and energetic, yet subtle and melodic. DiPiazza's two-minute solo "Marie" is beautifully inspiring and represents one of the highlights of this album. McLaughlin revisits his classic "Belo Horizonte" and conjures up some more evocative memories with a new acoustic rendition of "Reincarnation". Que Alegria offers some of the strongest music McLaughlin has put out, and its melodies are quite infectious.

John McLaughlin - Extrapolation (1969)

John McLaughlin's first recording as a leader features the future innovator playing guitar in an English quartet. Although McLaughlin contributed all ten pieces, baritonist John Surman actually dominates this music, often swinging quite hard. The historically significant set, although a lesser-known item in McLaughlin's discography, is quite musical and enjoyable in its own right.

Joining the duo is their life-long friend and musical brother Ustad Zakir Hussain on the tabla, who has been collaborating with John since they founded Shakti in the early '70s, acknowledged by most to be the first groundbreaking crossover East-West musical group.
