This is the second album under the guise of The 4th Dimension, who are every bit a match for McLaughlin’s intensity. Etienne M’Bappe’s five string bass and Gary Husband’s keys and extra drumming follow every twist, turn, leap and tangent, but gone is Mark Mondesir to be replaced by polyrhythmic powerhouse Ranjit Barot.

On July 1st, 2011, Montreux hosted the reunion of two master guitarists, Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin, with their "Invitation To Illumination" concert. Both musicians have been regulars at Montreux across the years but this was the first time they headlined their own concert together. The show features most of the tracks from their classic 1973 album Love Devotion Surrender mixed in with a wealth of other material. The evening was a showcase of supreme musical virtuosity and spirituality and typified the approach of these two great artists. It is certainly a performance not to be missed.

Although it is tempting to think that The Free Spirits (the trio featured on this CD), due to the similarity of the instrumentation (guitarist John McLaughlin, organist Joey DeFrancesco and drummer Dennis Chambers), would be an updating of Tony Williams's groundbreaking fusion group Lifetime, the reality is somewhat different. McLaughlin may get top billing but this music sounds very much like a Joey DeFrancesco-led Jimmy Smith revival date with most of the selections being blues-based. There are some introspective moments for the guitarist (who plays strictly electric here) but DeFrancesco dominates the ensembles and takes the lion's share of the solo space.

Released in March 2022, this album brings together seven tracks (selected by the master himself) recorded at the prestigious Swiss festival between 1978 and 2016. Over almost four decades, McLaughlin has conducted the Mahavishnu Orchestra (with Bill Evans, Mitchell Foreman, Jonas Hellborg and Danny Gottlieb), as well as with Paco de Lucia, but also in the bands One Truth (with Stu Goldberg, L. Shankar, Tom Stevens and Sonship Theus), Heart Of Things (with Gary Thomas, Jim Beard, Matt Garrison and Dennis Chambers), Free Spirits (with Joey De Francesco and Dennis Chambers) and 4th Dimension (with with Gary Husband, Étienne M'bappé and Ranjit Barot). The ideal setting to taste the art of a musician who has never stopped putting his incandescent virtuosity at the service of his music.

The recording you have in your hand documents the start of John McLaughlin’s journey towards his ideal acoustic guitar trio. For various reasons neither Larry Coryell or Christian Escoudé made it to the end of the journey, being replaced by Al Di Meola and Paco De Lucia, but both were more than capable of holding their own as this concert shows. Escoude, a gypsy-jazz child progidy, came to international attention at the 1978 Nice Jazz Festival; Coryell, a legendary jazz-rock pioneer with virtuosic acoustic skills, was already well known to McLaughlin. The concert was performed at the Den-en Coliseum, Tokyo, Japan July 24,1980, and broadcast by NHK radio.

This all-star band emerged from a discussion between Vernon Reid and Jack Bruce when Vernon was touring and recording with Jack around 2003. Vernon suggested using John Medeski on keyboards and Tony Williams acolyte Cindy Blackman on drums. This band premiered in December 2008 at the Blue Note in Tokyo. Their first album was released in the Spring of 2012. Recorded live on July, 7th 2012 at the Miles Davis Hall, Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland).

“Ronnie Scott’s…” mused the boundary-shattering guitarist John McLaughlin, “…where would I be without them?” The venerable London jazz club and its charismatic namesake gave so much to McLaughlin’s career, the roots of which extend as far back as McLaughlin’s stint as a member of the club’s house band in the 1960s. Since then, his pioneering spirit, instrumental virtuosity, and improvisational fearlessness have taken him around the world, put him on stage alongside fellow giants such as Miles Davis and Tony Williams, and has given listeners a series of compelling, revolutionary recordings that have redefined improvised music for generations to come.

"The cassette was recorded on a Philips portable tape recorder, smuggled into the circle of the City Hall, by dangling the mic over the balcony. The recorder is long gone, and apart from it having about five 'keys', being black in colour, and being bought for about £20 in the Spring of 1969, that is the limit of its existence that I can recall."
