Joints

Rock Joints deals exclusively with the mechanical genesis of joints in rocks. It is aimed at a coherent, critical and comprehensible presentation of the underlying mechanical processes of various types of joints and joint systems.

The aim of this book is to present as completely as possible a description of the joints of the human limbs, using photographs and drawings of anatomical dissections. Existing descriptive anatomical accounts are often theoretical and not linked to functional activity of the joints concerned; they lack practical demonstra­ tion of the anatomy. We hope to fill the gap in the available literature by presentation of this book. The work is directed towards anatomists, doctors interested in joint pathology, orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists, radiologists, specialists in sport injuries and rehabilitation, also to physicians in general, physiotherapists and students. The book is divided into seven chapters. Each chapter comprises two parts: the first is a brief account of the functional anatomy of the joint. It does not offer a complete description but an overall summary of the functional structures involved. The second section, the main part, includes illustrations (drawings and photographs of anatomical dissections). The dissections and the photographs were prepared in the Department of Anatomy directed by Professor HENRI M. DUVERNaY from cadaveric specimens preserved by the method described by WINCKLER (1964). The process of dissecting the ligamentous structures around joints has proved techni­ cally difficult. It is easy to create artificially structures from the mass of fibrous tissue and on a number of occasions we have been unable to locate ligaments which are described in some anatomical accounts.

Design of Artificial Human Joints & Organs is intended to present the basics of the normal systems and how, due to aging, diseases or trauma, body parts may need to be replaced with manmade materials. The movement of the body generates forces in various work situations and also internally at various joints, muscles and ligaments. It is essential to figure out the forces, moments, pressure etc to design replacements that manage these stresses without breaking down. The mechanical characterization of the hard and the soft tissues are presented systematically using the principles of solid mechanics. The viscoelastic properties of the tissue will also discussed. This text covers the design science and methodology from concept to blueprint to the final component being replaced. Each chapter will be a brief overview of various joint/organ replacement systems.

An increasing percentage of the population has at least one prosthetic joint. Imaging is required for both initial assessment and routine follow-up of the implant, and this book is intended as an informative and up-to-date guide to the subject. After an introductory section covering a range of background topics, the level of information offered by different imaging techniques in presurgical planning and postimplantation assessment is analyzed.
