Strutting across the stage, cocksure like the blues' answer to James Brown, Junior Wells owned one of the most dynamic voices in Chicago blues. He was as confident belting brassy soul as he was doing lowdown blues, his wide-toned amplified harmonica excursions always compelling. Before joining forces with Buddy Guy, Junior teamed up with light-fingered guitar master Earl Hooker at Mel London's Chief and Profile Records. It was a match made in blues heaven.

Nostalgia can hurt. I've just been watching "A Hard Day's Night" with my 16 year old daughter for the first time since I saw it at Derby Gaumont in 1964. It's brought back the thrills and possibilities of life that it revealed to me as an eleven year old boy; but it's also left a dull pain in my soul. For the summer an excellent NOW Thats What I Call Classic Soul gathered a lot of excellent data from the performers, Retro nostalgic! In the Midnight Hour is a song originally performed by Wilson Pickett and released on his album, also appearing on the album The Exciting Wilson Pickett. Sittin On The Dock of the Bay is a song co-written by soul singer Otis Redding and guitarist Steve Cropper. It was recorded by Redding twice, including once just days before his death in a plane crash.What Becomes of the Brokenhearted is a hit single recorded by Jimmy Ruffin and released on Motown Records Soul label in the summer. It is a ballad, with lead singer Jimmy Ruffin recalling the pain that befalls the brokenhearted.

Guitarist Dave Specter has always straddled the blues/jazz fence with a hip disregard for arbitrary restrictions. On Speculatin', his sixth Delmark CD, Dave has put his distinctive mark on a collection of outstanding instrumental tunes from all corners of these related genres, tossing in a latin beat and some greasy organ in addition to his unmistakable West Side and Texas-inspired blues licks.
