Remix albums, regardless of the band's stature, tend to be very hit or miss with hopefully several good tracks offset by those that simply are not up to par. It can be argued that a good remix is one that incorporates the remixer's sound and style into a song while staying faithful to the spirit of the original. KMFDM have always understood this, and as the Ultra Heavy Beat begins its 24th year, they bring us their first full-length remix album as a companion to their most recent release, Tohuvabohu.

Pioneers, philosophers, trailblazers, in short: prophets always have to assemble their flocks abroad before they find due recognition in their homelands. This also applies to the German art form KMFDM. Whether in the US, Japan, Australia or elsewhere (where they sold hundred thousands of records and embarked on various sold out tours) - for over a quarter of a century they are the epitome and synonym for a musical style of the harder variety: Industrial Rock.

KMFDM, commonly regarded as one of the driving forces in what we generally term industrial/rock since their formation in 1984, the band has been so much more, incorporating elements of so many musical styles to result in what they themselves refer to as the Ultra Heavy Beat. The 2019 release of PARADISE was a bold statement on the precarious state of the world, with the heaviest infusion of funk and dub sounds the band has exhibited since such landmark albums as 1988’s UAIOE and 1990’s NAÏVE.

Electronic | 1cd | EAC Rip | Flac + Cue + Log | covers
Metropolis MET500 | rel: 2007 | 705Mb

KMFDM definitely has their sound, and they’ve stuck with that throughout the years, this CD is no different. I’m not saying this is a derivative album, I just know that when a KMFDM song comes on, it’s KMFDM. This release does tend to be pretty heavy at times, which is pretty cool, but I don’t think they really know how to do heavy well. It almost seems a bit forced. And the songs where Sasha is the primary singer are much better than when Lucia sings, not to say her songs are bad, I just noticed that the others were much better.

KMFDM's seventh album, Nihil, finds the band sitting comfortably in the groove it started with 1990s Naive. At this point, the German outfit has become an industrial musical collective, with various contributing vocalists and musicians coming in and out of the fold, while the nerve center of the group continues to be founders En Esch and Sasha Konietzko. Additionally, the group's ingenious marketing/merchandising skills (using the bold-faced KMFDM logo, idealistic sloganeering, and appropriately simplistic comic book artwork of Brute) have given the band a powerful, iconic image.
