James Francis McHugh 1894 – 1969) was a U.S. composer. One of the most prolific songwriters from the 1920s to the 1950s, he composed over 270 songs. On this CD, his songs are performed by such artists as Nat King Cole, Julie London, Judy Garland, Chet Baker, Dinah Washington, Peggy Lee, to name just a few.

Hoagy Carmichael was one of the great composers of popular songs in the middle part of the 20th century. He is best known for writing "Stardust", "Georgia On My Mind", "The Nearness of You", and "Heart and Soul" – four of the most-recorded American songs of all time. Performers of this exceptional compilation are: Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, Mel Torme, Louis Armstrong, Dinah Shore, Dean Martin, Lou Rauls, Betty Hutton, Johnny Mercer, and even Carmichael himself handling the honors on the final track.

One of the most prolific of Tin Pan Alley scribes, Jerome Kern is given the royal treatment here with 25 vintage interpretations by some of the finest singers in jazz and pop. The likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan may be missing (two stars from songbook competitors Verve), but Capitol more than makes up for it with golden takes from Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Nat King Cole, Jo Stafford, and Judy Garland. Among the many other choice cuts on display, the disc features particularly fine sides by Dinah Washington ("Jim") and Nancy Wilson ("Dearly Beloved").

Sammy Cahn wrote lyrics of many of Frank Sinatra's biggest hits, most of which were co-written with Jimmy Van Heusen who deserves a collection of his own. These songs are fabulous and if you enjoy wonderful, relaxing music, this (and all the other "Capitol Sings" collections) is worth your while.

The title of Tara O'Grady's third album comes from a bass player in Nashville who upon hearing her sing in the Tennessee recording studio, tweeted the above quote to describe her voice. Her original songs were inspired by Irish people she met from Belfast to Butte, and everywhere in between. And she throws in a few favorite Irish traditional tunes for good measure. Inspired by Belfast native Van Morrison, her brother Tom O'Grady composed the music for To Be Missing the Sun and La Dee Da, and the featured saxophonist/clarinetist Michael Hashim co-wrote That's What the Miners Would Say, a tribute to the Irish immigrants who died in a fire in Butte, Montana.
