King Crimson is a decidedly unwieldy band. Spanning more than 35 years (as of this writing) and at least seven distinct lineups, and complicated by the studio vs. live dichotomy (not to mention no hits to speak of), this is a band that almost refuses to be anthologized. Anything less than a box set doesn't really do the band justice, but anything more than two discs may seem like a grand investment to someone who just wants to get acquainted with them. Since King Crimson completely ceased to exist in the mid- to late '70s and early '80s, that seems a logical dividing point in examining the band's output. And that's exactly how Robert Fripp approached it when he assembled the 21st Century Guide to King Crimson in two volumes. Volume One covered 1969-1974 with two studio and two live discs, and Volume Two covered 1981-2003, also with two studio and two live discs. These were aimed at the uninitiated as "a comprehensive overview for new ears of all that is necessary in the Crimson corpus," and despite minor quibbling about what wasn't included, they served the purpose very well. Trouble is, the uninitiated might not be willing to drop the dough for such a lavish introduction no matter how thorough a portrait it paints of the band.

Having just released Frame by Frame compilation two years before, this compilation was actually released not at the right timing even though the songs featured were quite representative for the band. This might be considered as budget boxset for those who missed Frame by Frame. Newbie would see the change of music direction starting from track 9 Elephant Talk onwards. In terms of music style, this compilation starts from high drive 21st century schizoid man with its heavy guitar riffs, dynamic combined work of bass guitar, drum, guitar and mellotron to Epitaph with its dark mellow nuance. In the court of the Crimson King continues the style of Epitaph and it provides a complete picture to newbie on how King Crimson sounded at the beginning of their career. Cat food (edit) would provide another style of Crimson sound followed with Ladies of the road in similar vein. Starless (abridged) is a great introduction to another bluesy dark prog style of the band. The listeners will get surprised with the entry of Elephant talk which sounds very differently with previous eight tracks.

Lizard, King Crimson's third studio album and second release of 1970, was, like its predecessor In the Wake of Poseidon, the product of a studio band. It was also the first Crimson album for which Robert Fripp provided all of the music. Remarkably self-contained & sounding somewhat atypical for a King Crimson album, even by the standards of a band that rarely sounded similar from album to album, Lizard is an often overlooked and under-appreciated gem from the band's early years. Certainly at the time of release, anyone expecting an extension of the soundscapes introduced & explored on the band's earlier two albums was in for a surprise.

Alternately trippy and thunderous, this 1974 LP (featuring Fripp, Bruford and Wetton) hit the U.S. charts almost a year to the day after Larks' Tongues in Aspic did. The Great Deceiver; Lament; The Night Watch; Trio this experimental gem managed to outdo the prog classic that preceded it; this reissue is full of alternate mixes and other special treats. The CD features a new stereo mix plus bonus tracks including the ultra-rare (performed once only) Guts on My Side . The DVD-Audio disc has the original and new mixes plus a 5.1 surround mix, 5.1 Lossless audio and stereo mixes, video footage of Easy Money and an improv from NY's Central Park ('73), audio extras including live cuts and radio edits and more!

Alongside Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer and Genesis, King Crimson has been one of the most emblematic British progressive rock bands of all time. Always creatively led by Robert Fripp, the group has gone through numerous member changes and sound mutations. After several years of hard work, Music Brokers is proud to present The Many Faces Of King Crimson, an album where we will find hard to find works and lesser known projects from most of the members that at some point were part of the band.

Precious few live documents have survived of King Crimson's incipient incarnation, featuring Robert Fripp (guitar), Michael Giles (drums/percussion/vocals), Greg Lake (bass/vocals), Ian McDonald (flute/sax/Mellotron/vocals), and Peter Sinfield (lyrics). Live at Fillmore East, 1969 (2004) – the 25th installment in King Crimson's Collectors' Club – is especially important, as even fewer had been captured in this quality. In terms of the band's public life, this quintet barely lasted 12 months from their earliest rehearsals circa mid-January 1969 through to December of the same year.
