King Gizzard

King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard return with new album K.G., their sixteenth since forming in 2010. In the wake of a global pandemic, it’s a collection of songs composed and recorded remotely after the six members of the band retreated to their own homes scattered around Melbourne, Australia. K.G. is a pure distillation of the King Gizzard sound, one that cherry picks the best aspects of previous albums and contorts them into new shapes via defiantly non-western rock scales.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will return on June 11th with the band’s 18th studio album, Butterfly 3000. The 10-track LP will be released via the band’s own KGLW label.

Christmas came early for fans of Australian psych-rock outfit King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. The Melbourne-based musicians dropped an unannounced album today, Live at Levitation.

Good things come to those who wait, and the magnificent Changes is worth every one of the 2,628,000 minutes King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard invested in it. Soaked in the warm sonics of 70s r’n’b and guided by simple chord-changes that contain multitudes and rounding out another remarkable year for the group, their fifth album of 2022 is a luminous, soft-pop marvel. The planet is in trouble. Dire trouble. But fear not: Melbourne seven-piece King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard return to save us all, this time armed only with blast beats, an arsenal of well-oiled guitars that are locked and loaded, and a desire to melt faces clean off. Their fifteenth studio album, Infest The Rats' Nest, out Aug 16th, is by far The Gizz's hardest and heaviest album to date. How metal is it? Very Metal. Maybe even more.

For their 26th album, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard swap the widescreen concepts of their recent albums for the intimacy of six good friends collaborating on the most bonhomie-laden set they've yet committed to wax. For 'Flight b741', bandleader Stu Mackenzie says King Gizzard 'wanted to make something that was primal, instinctual, more 'from the gut'. Tapping into the country-fried '70s American rock on which they were all raised - along with the ornery garage-rock roots from which their mighty discography sprang - 'Flight b741' is lightning caught inside a bottle. Across its 10 ragged, glorious barnburners, King Gizzard flesh out rough skeletons of songs with their inspired improvisations, inimitable grooves and a unique pass-the-mic approach to vocals that saw every member of the band raise their voice and sing.

The psychedelic rockers didn’t initially plan to make a pair of linked album. As frontman Stu Mackenzie explained in a statement, the original goal involved “the notes between the notes,” returning to the microtonal explorations they had first begun on 2017’s Flying Microtonal Banana. Then the quarantine compositions took on a life of their own.
