Leopold Kozeluch (1747-1818) was born in Bohemia but spent his professional life in Vienna, where he became a famous musician and composer, for a time even eclipsing Mozarts fame! The sonatas in this second volume have 3 or 4 movements, of the same scope as Haydns sonatas. They are written in the Galante Style, with easy flowing melodies, featuring a highly developed keyboard virtuosity in the abundance of scales, arpeggios, runs in thirds and sixths, repeated notes and tremolos.Jenny Soonjin Kim plays a fortepiano(Kozeluch preferred fortepianos toharpsichords). For forty years the Bohemian composer Leopold Ko eluch produced a sequence of keyboard sonatas that some commentators preferred to those of his great contemporary, Mozart. The four sonatas on Volume 8 exemplify Kozeluch's vitality and expressive breadth. Sonatas Nos. 31 and 32, published in the year of Mozart's death, are notable for their exploration of new technical devices and a daring harmonic palette worthy of Clementi.

Juxtaposing early and late sonatas reveals just how much Leopold Koeluchs style changed over a thirty-year period. The three early sonatas from the 1770s, though harmonically modest, fizz with Rococo charm and elegance. The late sonatas meanwhile were intended for a fortepiano, which had eclipsed the harpsichord, and are twomovement works. They feature bustling rondos and deft janissary devices, one of which is the buzzing effect generated by a knee lever on the original 1815 Johann Fritz instrument used in this recording.

This is the final volume of Kemp English’s pioneering world premiere recording of Leopold Kozeluch’s complete solo keyboard sonatas. It is played, once again, on appropriate authentic instruments and charts just how profoundly Kozeluch’s style changed over the decades, from the charming early Sonata No. 47 for harpsichord to the three late romantic sonatas. The virtuosic Sonata No. 49, with its pedal effects and extended compass, shows techniques derived from the English Piano School and in the final sonata he encapsulates to perfection the sound world of early nineteenth-century Vienna.

Leopold Koželuch, the great Czech contemporary of Mozart, won enormous prestige in his adopted city of Vienna. His sequence of keyboard sonatas, written over a four-decade span, exemplifies the high-Classic style and comprises some of the greatest such works of their time. This volume focuses on the years 1788–89 by which time Koželuch’s command of form and texture proves as daring as his harmonic palette. There is rhythmic vivacity in the opening movements of Nos. 25 and 28 and the beautiful Siciliana of No. 27 shows the increasing profundity of his slow movements. The same sonata’s finale is a breathtaking rollercoaster of vitality.

Some contemporaries in Vienna judged the Bohemian Leopold Koželuch an even finer composer than Mozart. He was especially esteemed for his mastery of the keyboard sonata, couched in the “high-Classic” style, which are amongst the most important of their time. In this volume, the early Sonata No.37, full of beautiful simplicity, is contrasted with the Sturm und Drang vehemence of Sonata No.36. Expansive slow movements in Sonatas Nos. 34 and 35 reveal endless cantabile beauties.
