For forty years the Bohemian composer Leopold Ko eluch produced a sequence of keyboard sonatas that some commentators preferred to those of his great contemporary, Mozart. The four sonatas on Volume 8 exemplify Kozeluch's vitality and expressive breadth. Sonatas Nos. 31 and 32, published in the year of Mozart's death, are notable for their exploration of new technical devices and a daring harmonic palette worthy of Clementi.

Some contemporaries in Vienna judged the Bohemian Leopold Koželuch an even finer composer than Mozart. He was especially esteemed for his mastery of the keyboard sonata, couched in the “high-Classic” style, which are amongst the most important of their time. In this volume, the early Sonata No.37, full of beautiful simplicity, is contrasted with the Sturm und Drang vehemence of Sonata No.36. Expansive slow movements in Sonatas Nos. 34 and 35 reveal endless cantabile beauties.

Juxtaposing early and late sonatas reveals just how much Leopold Koeluchs style changed over a thirty-year period. The three early sonatas from the 1770s, though harmonically modest, fizz with Rococo charm and elegance. The late sonatas meanwhile were intended for a fortepiano, which had eclipsed the harpsichord, and are twomovement works. They feature bustling rondos and deft janissary devices, one of which is the buzzing effect generated by a knee lever on the original 1815 Johann Fritz instrument used in this recording.

A native of Bohemia, Leopold Koželuch made his name in Vienna, a thriving musical centre dubbed ‘the land of the Clavier’ by Mozart. The sonatas in this volume all appeared in 1784, meeting the challenge of Mozart’s popularity head-on. Koželuch was singularly adept at producing what was considered the ideal fortepiano sonata of the time, his high reputation making him an influential supporter of a new instrument capable of accommodating ‘the clarity, the delicacy, the light and shade he demanded in music’.

Howard Shelley’s survey of the complete piano sonatas of Clementi was acclaimed not only as a set of benchmark performances, but also as the rediscovery of a composer who was uniquely important in his lifetime, which overlapped the careers of Scarlatti and Chopin. This set of Capriccios and Variations is something of a footnote to the series. The earlier works demonstrate Clementi’s lighter and more whimsical side. Most of this music was written to entertain and amuse, with many fantastical virtuoso flourishes of an improvisatory feel.

Considering Ignaz Pleyels complete oeuvre, his works for solo piano are not so numerous like in the oeuvres by Haydn, Wanhal, Kozeluch, Clementi, Mozart or Dussek. Pleyels varied piano chamber music (48 piano trios and 15 violin sonatas (violin & piano)) proves his preference for this genre, obviously an inspiration during his youth. However, his mastery in composing appears also in his works for solo piano, such as the sonatas Ben 571, 572, 601-670 and in his own arrangements of his chamber music like the Sonata in three movements V, G major, Ben 332, 1786, which is recorded on this album. This sonata is played in a subtle way by the pianist Varvara Manukyan on a grand piano of Camille Pleyel. Compared with other grand pianos of that time, this one has the finest and leanest sound, due to its very thin soundboard, its thin strings and little lightweight hammers.
