Kozeluch Complete Sonatas

This is the first recording of Doles’ complete 6 keyboard sonatas, brilliantly played by Jenny Kim on a period instrument, a fortepiano after Walter, built by Michael Walker. Jenny Kim is also recording a complete cycle of Sonatas by Kozeluch for Brilliant Classics, she pairs a thorough historical knowledge to an infectious musicality and “Spielfreude”.

Jenny Soonjin Kim has performed in major venues in Europe, Asia, and North America. Kim has recorded keyboard works ranging from Bach to Schoenberg for Arabesque Records (which once nominated her for the prestigious Gilmore Artist Award), as well as the complete keyboard sonatas of both Leopold Kozeluch and Johann Friedrich Doles (a world premiere) on fortepiano for Brilliant Classics.

Considering Ignaz Pleyels complete oeuvre, his works for solo piano are not so numerous like in the oeuvres by Haydn, Wanhal, Kozeluch, Clementi, Mozart or Dussek. Pleyels varied piano chamber music (48 piano trios and 15 violin sonatas (violin & piano)) proves his preference for this genre, obviously an inspiration during his youth. However, his mastery in composing appears also in his works for solo piano, such as the sonatas Ben 571, 572, 601-670 and in his own arrangements of his chamber music like the Sonata in three movements V, G major, Ben 332, 1786, which is recorded on this album. This sonata is played in a subtle way by the pianist Varvara Manukyan on a grand piano of Camille Pleyel. Compared with other grand pianos of that time, this one has the finest and leanest sound, due to its very thin soundboard, its thin strings and little lightweight hammers.

Dr. Rochelle Sennet has established herself as a well-known performer, teacher, and scholar. Her recital programs showcase her versatility at the keyboard, with frequent performances of works by Bach, Beethoven, and African American composers such as H. Leslie Adams, Jeffrey Mumford, James Lee III, and Pulitzer-Prize winning composer George Walker.
