Any chance that one has to hear a master musician in his or her preferred setting is a gift. For all the one-offs and ensemble by committee type of gigs that spring up, it is the reunion with familiar collaborators for a stint of a few nights that really becomes integral for the best performances.

Joachim Kühn s finger is always on the pulse of the times, and so it is no surprise that he repeatedly seeks the company of visionary young musicians. When Joachim Kühn received the invitation from the Goethe Institute to play two concerts in Russia, he immediately did some research on the scene there. He contacted his friend, the author Marc Sarrazy, who was working on a book about Russian jazz at the time, and asked for his advice. He recommended one name in particular to Kühn: Alexey Kruglov. This saxophonist, born in 1979, is considered to be one of the greatest Russian jazz talents.

KUHN FU’s third album Chain the Snake is released by BERTHOLD records on March 22nd. Christian Kühn who also composed the music sees “stylistic changes since our last record. The band today is a paranoid – prog – punk – jazz performance,” he explains. Working on the previous album Kuhnspiracy, Kühn had suffered from a “post romantic jazz/rock disorder”, a condition unknown to reputable psychiatry. “The romantic stood for an unfulfilled craving, still there, but the punk who doesn’t care is winning at the moment” he explains.

In the past few years, however, Kuhn has been revisiting his past and recorded several straight jazz albums that proved he was still a capable pianist. As Time Goes By, released shortly before his 80th birthday, finds Kuhn with a large combo (called "The Best," no less) and the Filmorchester Babelsberg (Film Orchestra Babelsberg), performing popular jazz standards from past decades.

Each new band in Joachim Kühn's creative career has marked a new departure, a broadening of his horizons. Now, in double bassist Thibault Cellier and drummer Sylvain Darrifourcq, the pianist has found two musicians with whom he can achieve the things that are important to him at this stage of his life, to take a path which allows him even more freedom, which is to be taken – in his words – “the French way, with lightness, speed and elegance”.Playing in the context of a piano trio runs right through the pianist's oeuvre.

The cantata Opening of the Wells, one of Martinu’s most intimate professions of love for his native land, simply cannot be absent from the Supraphon catalogue. The composition is inspired by the ancient custom of saying good-bye to the winter and welcoming the spring, when children come to “open” springlets and purify them of deposits of sludge. A “rite of spring”, yet one entirely different to that we know from Stravinsky. In the character of the wanderer, the composer himself too returns to his native land – at least in his memories, since from 1938 until the end of his life he had no chance to come back home. Martinu also completed the other two cantatas – Legend of the Smoke from Potato Fires and Mikeš of the Mountains – in the final years of his life, homesick, with the memory of his native region and folk songs in his heart.
