Inventing and developing the genre of the string quartet, Joseph Haydn carried out the most original study of it, as evidenced by the opus. 33. The latter then appears as a real deepening of this universe in the making, because, as Bernard Fournier rightly notes, “at the same time that he was firmly establishing – but perhaps without fully realizing it – the genre of the quartet, Haydn was reflecting in Opus 20 about the means and possibilities of expressing musical thought, turned to seriousness and concentration, Opus 33, on the contrary, is liveliness and effervescence, which become the main aesthetic issue, even if, as in Opus 20, the discourse is far from being concentrated in one direction, but continues translate the nuances and diversity of thought. In an interpretive concept of absolute refinement, the Parcagni quartet offers us here the quartet Nos. 2, 3 and 5 of Opus 33. The flexibility of phrases, the purity of the melodic line, the warm colors, the lightness of the attacks bring their essential benefit.

The Prazák Quartet has long distinguished itself with its passionate, nationalistic interpretations of late Romantic composers such as Dvorák, Smetana, and Janácek, as well as insightful and precision playing of composers from the Second Viennese School such as Schoenberg, Webern, and Bern. That this ensemble produces successful, enjoyable recordings of string quartets of the aforementioned composers is not now in question. What is questionable is whether or not the same approach the Prazák uses for Janácek or Schoenberg will produce a convincing recording of the Mozart "Haydn" quartets, and the answer is no. The ensemble's sound throughout this recording is simply too sparse and piercing, particularly in the first violin. The viola and cello sound quite nasal and strained. Much of the time, the approach to the instruments is exceedingly forceful and harsh. When the musicians do finally get around to trying to produce a piano dynamic, their sound appears out of breath, almost as if they have difficulty maintaining contact with the string while playing softly. The superior audio fidelity of this SACD release only heightens listeners' awareness of these shortcomings in sound quality. Gone are traces of elegance, gracefulness, or decorum that many listeners will find intrinsic in enjoyable performances of Mozart.

He is one of the most universally loved musicians on the classical planet. Tormented, unpredictable, Sviatoslav Richter was in permanent introspection, playing the piano as if to free himself from his demons and his obsessions. Participating in a Richter recital was always a shock for the listener, who left enriched by what he had been able to experience. Expressive density, contemplation, intimacy with the composer, even austerity were the characteristics of his piano art. His phobia of the studios has preserved what was truer and more spontaneous about him, thanks to numerous live and often “pirated” recordings, which make Richter one of the most documented pianists of the 20th century.
