Vince Guaraldi was a well-respected jazz pianist whose greatest success came from avenues usually closed to contemporary jazz artists: he enjoyed a hit single at a time when jazz had largely been exiled from the pop charts, and he scored a series of very successful animated television specials (namely the Charlie Brown seasonal specials scores and soundtracks for which his name has become synonymous), a medium where cookie-cutter pop music was traditionally the order of the day.

It's always a good thing when a new recording fills a hole in the catalogue, and this all-Saint-Saëns chamber programme from seasoned collaborators Renaud Capuçon, Bertrand Chamayou and Edgar Moreau is one of those. Firstly because, while there already exists a generous smattering of readings of the first violin and cello sonatas from a range of top names, they tend not to be paired with each other. Plus, they've never been paired with the magnificent Piano Trio No. 2, which itself has been much less recorded. Add the fact that here we have not just three of France's finest artists, but among them the pianist who carried off Gramophone's “2019 Recording of the Year” precisely for his Saint-Saëns (recording of Concertos Nos. 2 & 5), and there's a whole host of reasons why this album deserves your full attention.

The Swiss conductor and choir master Michel Corboz, who passed away on September 2nd, devoted the most part of his life to sacred choral music, which he performed on stage and on record with such ensembles as the Ensemble vocal de Lausanne or the Orchestra of the Gulbenkian Foundation. We are mourning the loss of this great musical figure, to whom we pay homage with this collection of various requiems he recorded throughout his rich career, including Mozart (featuring Elly Ameling), Brahms, Fauré, Verdi, and the ethereal composition of Duruflé, made available for the first time on digital platforms.

The programme for Alexandre Tharaud’s first Erato album dedicated to Schubert comprises the four Impromptus D 899 (op 90), the six Moments musicaux and, in Tharaud’s own transcription for piano, four excerpts from the stage music for Rosamunde. When Tharaud performed the Impromptus at London’s Wigmore Hall in 2014, The Guardian wrote: “He got to the heart of the beauties and abysses of this music.”

Superman & Lois is an American superhero drama television series developed for The CW by Todd Helbing and Greg Berlanti, based on the DC Comics characters Superman and Lois Lane, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch star as the title characters Clark Kent / Superman, a costumed superhero, and Lois Lane, a journalist for the Daily Planet. Superman & Lois was announced as a pilot in October 2019 and was ordered to series in January 2020. Filming began in October 2020 and concluded in July 2021. The series premiered on February 23, 2021. Superman & Lois was renewed for a second season in March 2021 and is scheduled to premiere in early 2022 on The CW.
