Unlike other labels subjected to exhaustive multi-disc retrospectives like this whopping ten-disc Revolutions in Sound: Warner Bros. Records – The First Fifty Years, Warner Brothers never embodied a scene or sound: they've always embodied what a major label should be – a dominant force that chronicles and dictates the sound of the mainstream. Coming out at the tail-end of 2008, when the influence of major labels is on a slow steady decline, Revolutions in Sound can be seen as a portrait of a time that's beginning to recede into the past: a time when there was such a thing as mass entertainment, when the pop audience all shared a common bond of hit records they either loved or rallied against. Perhaps the greatest things about this monumental box set is that it captures that colossus while also illustrating that for a while, majors did take risks. Of course, Warner was the riskiest of all the majors, never held back by an anti-rock & roll sourpuss like Mitch Miller, who struggled to keep CBS out of the tumult of the '60s (this with no less than Bob Dylan as the label's flagship rock artist). Instead, Warner embraced the underground, recording some of the strangest to shake out of the '60s, and that adventure fits a label that turned to rock & roll to help establish themselves as a real player at the turn of the '60s.

To call David Axelrod an auteur is putting it mildly. Although finally revered the world over by hip-hoppers and lovers of his 60s and 70s cinematic instrumentals (and an excellent eponymous solo offering on the Mo’ Wax label from 2001), Axelrod’s earliest recordings from 1967-70 have remained shrouded in mystery.

This is a cool little compilation of late-'60s and early-'70s spiritual soul and funky jazz. The "psychedelic" term in the title has more to do with the era than the music. It's true there are some spaced-out moments here, such as Sun Ra's "Spontaneous Simplicity" and Freddie Hubbard's notoriously freaky "Threnody for Sharon Tate," but let's face it, the former was psychedelic before the word was invented and the latter was attempting an indictment of the entire hippie generation. The majority of this material was rooted in early funk and fusion explorations of the Miles Davis era. There are some revelatory cuts here, such as the opener, Gary Burton's way-out groover "Vibrafinger," which is rockin', dirty, nasty, and greasy.

Covered, A Revolution in Sound is a tribute album produced and released by Warner Bros. Records to commemorate its 50th anniversary as a record label. The album consists of some of the greatest hits from previous and current artists from the late 20th century, while the songs featured on the album themselves are performed by current artists that are signed to Warner Bros. Records. Warner's sister label Elektra Records had done something similar to this nearly 20 years before with an album titled Rubáiyát: Elektra's 40th Anniversary, which featured then-current Elektra artists covering other songs originally released on Elektra or sister label Asylum Records.

Released in 1988 and produced by George Clinton and Bootsy Collins, it features contributions from several key P-Funk members, including Lige Curry (lead vocals and bass) and Andre Foxxe Williams (vocals and guitar). The album blends funk and New Jack Swing styles with a heavy use of drum machines and synthesizers, characteristic of Clinton's productions during this period.

This boxed-set features all three albums Herbie Hancock released for Warner Bros Records between 1969 and 1971. They were an extraordinary creative three years, a little island of free-wheeling experimentation between his stint with the Miles Davis Sextet and his later career as the presiding genius of jazz-funk. Herbie Hancock’s Warner Brothers recordings represent the emergence and unfolding of his Mwandishi Band. This genre-crossing group pioneered an expressive use of sound and technologies, a blend of beat and abstraction, Afrocentric sensibilities, and while fronted by a strong leader, a collectivist approach to making music. The band prepared the groundwork for Hancock’s emergence as a proponent of a synergy between jazz and funk.
