Listen To This Artie! is an "audience recording merge + remaster". The double CD was recorded at Madison Square Garden in New York City on 3 September, 1971, two months before the group would finish Led Zeppelin IV (Zoso), and the discs are edited together from two different tape sources, both from the audience, including someone named Artie, who is recognized in the title of the boot.

The reason why the front and back cover looks like The Beatles' 1963 album Please Please Me is because of the inclusion of two Beatles covers in their set. Originally released by Tarantura in 1995, Please Please Me is a triple CD set recorded in Osaka on 28 September, 1971 at Koseinenkin Kaikan (Festival Hall) in support of "Led Zeppelin IV". While the show the following night is available from the soundboard (which I will upload next week), I like this set for the oddities of Beatles songs, along with "Down By The Riverside" and "We Shall Overcome" in the set with a devoted sing-along attempt from the crowd. Robert Plant encourages the crowd to go a little louder and questions why they are so calm and quiet, but the Osaka attendees get into American folk covers. Discs 1 and 2 are from a stereo audience recording, Disc 3 is in mono and may sound rough at times but once it reaches "Communication Breakdown", it no longer matters. Released by the Wendy label.

Jimmy Page was a top London studio guitarist before he got rich and famous as the musical leader of Led Zeppelin. The group's fourth–and arguably their finest–album is as much a tribute to his technique as a monument to his versatility. Page produced the album, co-wrote all eight songs, and played mandolin as well as all the guitars. Musically, this 1971 disc ranges from acoustic English folke ("Goin' to California" and "The Battle of Evermore," the latter featuring the late Fairport Convention frontwoman Sandy Denny) to bone-crushing, bluesy riff-slinging. On the album's centerpiece, "Stairway to Heaven," these light and dark strains are dramatically intertwined. The chiming "Four Sticks" aside, it's the Little Richard-inspired "Rock and Roll" and the tricky time changes–a Zeppelin trademark–of the fast-and-furious "Black Dog" that elevate this album into more than just a bustle in aspiring guitarists' hedgerows.

Alice in Chains is believed to be the primary influence upon Godsmack. In early interviews, the band admitted they started off as a tribute band to Alice in Chains. Godsmack obtained their name from the Alice in Chains song "God Smack" from the album Dirt. [1] In an interview with MTV upon the death of Alice in Chains lead singer Layne Staley, Godsmack frontman Sully Erna stated that Staley "was single-handedly the guy that got me to start singing." [2] Other bands cited by Godsmack members as their primary influences typically include Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Rush, and Black Sabbath.

John Paul Jones stayed quiet for years after the disbandment of Led Zeppelin, performing the occasional arranging, soundtrack, or production gig, or collaborating with such avant garde musicians as Diamanda Galas. Throughout it all, he never released a full-fledged solo album – until the fall of 1999, when he unleashed Zooma. Anyone that was following who Jones worked with in the '90s – including Galas, the Butthole Surfers, and R.E.M. – shouldn't be entirely surprised by the depth, range, and gleeful strangeness on Zooma, but those expecting something like Led Zeppelin IV will be disappointed.

Picking our list of the Top 100 '70s Rock Albums was no easy task, if only because that period boasted such sheer diversity. The decade saw rock branch into a series of intriguing new subgenres, beginning, at the dawn of the '70s, with heavy metal. Singer-songwriters came into their own; country-rock flourished. The era ended with the revitalizing energy of punk and New Wave. No list would be complete without climbing onto every one of those limbs. Here are the Top 100 '70s Rock Albums, presented chronologically from the start of the decade.
