Buster Williams leads a trio with pianist Kenny Barron and drummer Lenny White in this live concert that was held as a benefit for Cystic Fibrosis Research, Inc. Williams and Barron had worked together on many occasions prior to this date, appearing on each others' albums and working together in the quartet Sphere, while White is equally at home in mainstream jazz and fusion, having worked with numerous leaders and recording CDs of his own. The introspective interpretation of Thelonious Monk's "We See" is a solid opener, giving equal time to feature all three musicians. Williams introduces "Concierto de Aranjuez" unaccompanied, giving it a particularly haunting flavor with his thick tone. Barron contributed two originals, including the lovely "Song for Abdullah" and the moving "Nikara's Song." The trio wraps the concert with a driving interpretation of "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top." Strangely, neither the recording date or the performance venue is listed anywhere in the extensive liner notes to this rewarding CD.

On her first jazz quartet "Visions", award-winning saxophonist Melissa Aldana connects her work to the legacy of Latina artists who have come before her, creating a pathway for her own expression. Inspired by the life and works of Frida Kahlo, Aldana creates a parallel between her experiences as a female saxophone player in a male-dominated community, and Kahlo’s experiences as a female visual artist working to assert herself in a landscape dominated by men. On her first jazz quartet recording, Aldana adds a new dimension to her sound, resulting in a transformative movement of expression and self-identity.

Label: Enja Records | Rel: 1993

Arthur Blythe, whose alto tone has been quite original ever since the start of his career, is joined by pianist John Hicks, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Bobby Battle on this superior quartet date from Enja. Blythe really stretches out on this "Live at the Village Vanguard" set, with six of the seven songs being over nine minutes long. "Jana's Delight" (which is based on a five-note pattern), "JB Blues," a remake of Blythe's "Lenox Avenue Breakdown," and one of the best versions ever of Thelonious Monk's "Light Blue" are the high points of the explorative program. Arthur Blythe fans are strongly advised to pick up this particularly strong effort.

Saxophonist, composer and bandleader John Coltrane has been almost as popular in death as he was during his lifetime. The prolific jazzman passed away at 40 but left a legacy of influential musical work. The World According to John Coltrane is one of the few documentaries to feature the background of this famous player. Directed by Robert Palmer, the hour-long release delves into Coltrane's beginnings starting with his childhood in North Carolina. It also showcases some live performances including the songs "My Favorite Things", "So What" and "Naima". Narration is provided by close friends and peers like Roscoe Mitchell and La Monte Young. Having recorded with masters Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and Ornette Coleman, Coltrane held his own and even surpassed the popularity of many of his contemporaries.

You may know organist Larry Young from his work in The Tony Williams Lifetime band (with John McLaughlin) and later with Jimi Hendrix, and Carlos Santana or you may just be hip to his Blue Note 1960's years. Nonetheless, you would certainly be surprised to learn that he lived to be just 38 years old, passing away in 1978. As the philosopher Lao Tzu said, "The flame that burns twice as bright, burns half as long"
