This seminal, highly acclaimed 1959 gospel album from mandolin player Ira and guitarist Charlie Louvin remains the most significant release from the influential brothers, best known as a country act and mentioned by Elvis Presley as "his favourite duet". "Satan Is Real" is so closely associated with the brothers that its title was borrowed for a 2012 autobiography, co-written by Charlie Louvin not long before his death.

One of the great bluegrass bands in history, brothers Jim (born 1927) and Jesse (born 1929) McReynolds and their Virginia Boys remained at the top by changing with the times. Starting as a traditional brothers duet, Jim on guitar and Jesse on mandolin showed their versatility by following country's changing tastes, moving to country/folk when necessary to keep a road band going. Whatever style they played (including Berry Pickin' in the Country, an album of bluegrass versions of Chuck Berry tunes), they retained a pure country core, due in no small part to Jim's pure, high tenor and Jesse's virtuoso, cross-picking mandolin playing.

The blending of Don and Phil everly's voices is truly one of the great sounds of post-war American popular music. Derived from folk and traditional styles brought to the USA via immigrant communities, their seamless vocal harmonies had its precursor in mid-twentieth century duo/ family country music acts such as the louvin brothers, delmore brothers and many others. The Everly, however, were able to bring the fraternal harmony approach into the mainstream pop market of the late 1950s by dint of their Youth, good looks, and that other, far more elusive quality - timing. Alongside the other breakthrough acts of rock and roll's first wave, they were true musical frontiersmen that helped set the template for all that was to succeed them. The likes of The Beatles, the hollies, Simon & Garfunkel, the birds, Flying burrito brothers, Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Emmylou Harris, through to Billy Joe Armstrong (of Green day) and norah Jones are but a few of the notables whose music Bears the Everly influential thumbprint.

Louvin's rough, weathered voice is many years removed from the clean, soaring work of his Louvin Brothers heyday but his joy in the material is audible, and as a re-encapsulation of the country and folk traditions he grew up with and helped shape, the album's a lovely treat. He revisits a number of songs he recorded with brother Ira, including "Katy Dear" and "Mary of the Wild Moor," an enjoyable instance of compare-and-contrast where these versions still work just fine on their own.

Larry Ehrlich was at end of a long day in a studio in Bristol, VA. Carter and Ralph Stanley as well as Ralph Mayo and Curley Lambert entered the studio in front of one microphone, and Ehrlich, after seeing them play hog callings, a couple of radio shows, and a barn dance, asked the band to sing some of the traditional songs they had been recording for the past 16 years. The results, completely unearthed until now, are no less than stunning. This is the Stanleys as listeners have never heard them: laid-back, relaxed, and full of recollection and goodwill, singing and playing songs as familiar to them as their upbringing.
