At 30, boyish penniless aristocrat Ryno de Marigny has separated from Villini, a passionate Spaniard and his mistress of 10 years. He's now in love with Hermangarde, a young, wealthy, and titled virgin. Days before the wedding, the bride's grandmother sits Ryno down and insists on knowing if his affair is over. He relates a story of passion, which we see in flashbacks, swearing he loves only Hermangarde. After the wedding, the couple moves to a castle by the sea. And Villini? Can passion survive disgust and self-loathing?

Georges (Guy Bérardant) is head over heels in love with Claire (Julia Perrin), his lover. Since he still has nice feelings towards his wife (Brigitte) he would like to simply divorce, but she has the money. He decides to ask two killers Max (Joël Charvier) and Edmond (Dominique Aveline)) to do the job. Brigitte, being a gorgeous lady, has no trouble seducing both men and ruling them. So she asks them to kidnap Claire and have some fun with her. They film the scene and show it to the husband. The film ends in the usual orgy where the husband makes friend again with his wife who finally agrees on living with him and his lover.

Max (Dirk Bogarde) is a discreet, unassuming night porter working in a posh hotel in Vienna in 1957, tending to the guests' needs, from cold water to a bed-warming gigolo. Then Lucia (Charlotte Rampling) arrives at the hotel, on the arm of her husband, an American composer, and Max's past comes flooding back to him. It turns out Max was an S.S. officer at a Nazi concentration camp where Lucia was a beautiful young prisoner. She became, in effect, Max's sexual slave. Now, years later, their reunion shatters both of their lives. Lucia stays in Vienna after her husband travels on, in order to see Max, and they find themselves caught up in a renewal of their former sadomasochistic relationship.
