"Let me out, I can't breathe/ Gotta get out of this concrete hole," are the first words on Mike Oldfield's first album in six years – a cri de coeur accompanied by a video shot on a beach in the Bahamas, where he has lived since 2009. His concrete holes, clearly, are not as others'. But that doesn't impair the listening experience – if you accept that Man on the Rocks is the pop equivalent of a historical re-enactment society, it's oddly engrossing. The sound recreated here is the 1970s rock of Toto and the Steve Miller Band: all amiable, mid-tempo guitar amblings underscored by wistful thoughts about escape and freedom.

Musicien éclectique, le pianiste Clément Simon collectionne les projets dans sa région bordelaise natale avant d’intégrer le CMDL de Paris d’où il sort diplômé avec une mention Très Bien. Aussi à l’aise en sideman qu’en leader, en trio traditionnel ou bien dans un quintette faisant la part belle à ses compositions, on a pu l’apercevoir aux côtés de Didier Lockwood, Pierre Perchaud, Nicolas Moreaux mais aussi Marie-Claude Pietragalla ou Raúl Paz. Pétri d’influences allant du classique aux musiques traditionnelles en passant par le rythm’n blues et la musique de film, il mûrit un jazz unique, fait de lyrisme et de modernité.

Akron’s native bluesmen, The Juke Hounds, released their album, “Low Man on the Totem Pole,” a rip-roaring collection of 10 loud and vibrant tracks. The disc captures all the energy of a large blues festival, and it’s impossible not to get up and start shaking along to the rhythm of each tune. The guys are obviously well versed in the catchy music they write and perform, and “Low Man on the Totem Pole” is an example of how to do blues right. With repetitive hooks and toe-tapping rhythms, the band is pure fun and are experts at their craft.

Two years after 2013's The Beast in Its Tracks, the good news is Josh Ritter is feeling better about things. While The Beast in Its Tracks documented Ritter's often unsettled state of mind after the collapse of his marriage, 2015's Sermon on the Rocks is the sound of a man on the rebound, and while the album is hardly sunshine and cold beer throughout, these songs clearly reflect Ritter's tenacity and spirit rather than the damaged emotions that were front and center two years earlier.
