For their second LP "Only Love", Detroit punk/hardcore/experimental collective THE ARMED returned to GodCity Studio to work with Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou as executive producer. Continuing their signature process of collaborating with different drummers on each release, this time THE ARMED recruited Ben Koller (Converge, Killer Be Killed, Mutoid Man, All Pigs Must Die). The partnership led to an entirely new creative approach for the record, one that allowed them to achieve their most wildly innovative work to date. The goal for "Only Love" was to reach an overwhelming level of intensity without referencing the typical tent poles of the genres they're associated with. By imagining they had never heard punk, metal or hardcore and limiting references to pop and the music of their youth, THE ARMED were able to arrive at an incredibly intense, but wildly unique reinterpretation of aggressive music.

My introduction to the band known as Tub Ring was back in 2008 when they opened for Mindless Self Indulgence. I hadn't listened to anything from them and was more excited that they were touring with the guitarist of Creature Feature. I was absolutely taken aback when they took the stage and performed their brand of chaotic everything and the kitchen sink music. Since then I've been following them vigorously. Unfortunately they all but disappeared after their 2010 album The Secret Handshake. However following a successful crowd funding campaign to make a best of vinyl the band is back with a brand new full length album called A Choice Of Catastrophes. So does this album deliver after seven years? Or is it just a catastrophe?

Ni. We could just say that Ni is an instrumental rock band. We could just say that, grab a good coffee and look at their last album cover by thinking we’re enjoying the balcony. We could just be happy that the spring is coming back and that we can hear the birds singing all afternoon. We could just tell ourselves that we have waited a long time for it. However, to complicate it a little, we can also say that Ni is a four-headed monster. The big bad Ni has left the linear roads of the French department of Ain - from which it came - in order to live in a complex world paced by electrical sounds and varying polyrhythms.

The band’s next album, Melancholia, approaches quickly with an August 18, 2017 release date. The instrumental melodic mathcore band goes full-on calculus with this new song, crafting speedy passages that seem intent on giving the listener a surge of adrenaline. Everyone seems to be on their A game, giving us surgically precise shredding and atmospheric beauty all in one track. Guitarist Andrew Cresto states that ‘”Lost in a Reverie” perfectly reflects the album’s theme of violently repressed emotion, only to settle into a melancholic calm, much like life’. There’s a lot to take in, just like with their first single, but luckily for us YouTube has a repeat button! Save Us From The Archon will be joining The Ongoing Concept and Eidola as special guests on a tour throughout the United States starting August 17.

In its temple, shouts of the quartet make the windows crack, a stunning nervousness makes the walls stand and, finally, the strong foundations remove from ages to come all doubts regarding the durability of all these things. Inside, it is always like a squall: children run in all directions and parents dance around the bonfire. The waltz, the 4/4 time signature and verse and chorus structures take one last breath before being burned to ashes at the core of this fire. After two EPs and many terrific tour dates in Europe that have almost broken the stage, it is time for Ni to release an album. «Les insurgés de Rumilly» invites all those who like frantic riffs to a huge party that celebrates a sweet barbarism. No reply is expected.
