Max Liebermann

Le peintre allemand Max Liebermann [1847-1935] a joué un rôle essentiel dans les échanges artistiques franco-allemands. Il a contribué à faire apprécier le travail des impressionnistes français, au grand dam de Guillaume II, tenant d'une vision conservatrice et nationaliste de l'art.

Music is in my life since I can think. In my case music always had been present but for a long time it wasn’t at the centre of my thinking and activities yet. En 2010, Cornelius Gurlitt, 81 ans, est contrôlé à la frontière suisse avec sur lui 9 000 euros en liquide. Le fisc allemand le prend alors en filature. Plus tard, une perquisition à son domicile munichois révèle qu’il est en possession de 96 peintures, 675 estampes, 140 aquarelles et 299 dessins (dont des Courbet, Matisse, Picasso, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Max Liebermann, Kirchner, Klee, Kokoschka, Nolde, Munch). Les œuvres sont discrètement saisies et il faudra deux ans pour qu’un magazine allemand fasse état de cette bien étrange histoire…
