Lineup-wise, the Miki Berenyi Trio is just a pared-down version of the last, touring edition of Piroshka, a group that included Berenyi, her partner KJ "Moose" McKillop, and bassist Oliver Cherer (who stepped in when original Piroshka bassist Mick Conroy broke his arm during the band's tour for its second album). However, the approach this group has taken on Tripla is dramatically different from Piroshka's, and it's more than appropriate that they've given themselves a new moniker. While Piroshka seemed intentionally designed to blur Berenyi's role into that of an equal contributor to a four-piece rock band whose sound style was quite distinct from that of Lush's poppy shoegaze, the MB3 both front-faces the singer/guitarist and explicitly calls back to the dreampop she made in the ‘90s.

A new chapter, a new-line-up, a newly minted sound; Miki Berenyi Trio's debut album Tripla is a landmark record for its three creators: Miki Berenyi, KJ 'Moose' McKillop and Oliver Cherer. The album's richly layered, imaginative and uniquely slanted strain of dream pop is an often euphoric and sometimes melancholic mix of guitars and electronica, fronted by Miki's instantly recognisable vocal, overlaid with an often profound and sometimes abrasive or yearning view of the world. Miki Berenyi Trio, or MB3 for short, is named after its lead singer - a direct way to convey the presence of the former singer/co-guitarist of Lush, and one of the most instantly recognisable faces of the '90s - but the songwriting is entirely a three-way collaboration, as the album title describes: acknowledging the mother tongue of Miki's father, Tripla is Hungarian for 'triple'.

Entire albums spent exploring the depths of the various nasty things surrounding romantic relationships were nothing new by the mid-'90s, but the vaguely cinematic and slightly conceptual Split is something more. Perhaps it's the manner in which each distinctive song manages to melt into the next. Or maybe it's the across-the-board improvements over Spooky. Most knew they were capable of more after the decent but flawed record, but it's doubtful many could have predicted something this thoroughly wonderful and varied. Throughout, Lush sounds confident and downright muscular, as opposed to the feathery wisps of earlier material that could be knocked down with the slightest of breezes.

Lovelife represents a major shift in style for Lush. Nearly abandoning the trancy melodies and droning guitars that were its trademark, the band has crafted an album full of sharp hooks and melodies, one that owes a great deal to the Britpop mania of 1995. From the circular melody of the opening "Ladykillers," it's clear that Lush had been influenced by the direct, jagged pop of Elastica, but the band also has reached back into '60s pop. All of the ballads on Lovelife are rooted in the hazy dream pop of the early '90s, but they are given stylish, mod arrangements complete with muted brass. Even more startling is the Nancy Sinatra/Lee Hazlewood pastiche of "Ciao!," an irresistible duet between Miki Berenyi and Pulp's Jarvis Cocker.

Shoegaze lovers rejoice in the new sounds coming from Blushing’s new album Possessions on Kanine Records. Featuring Miki Berenyi, the front person of 90’s shoegaze, indie pop greats Lush and her new band Piroshka on the main single ‘Blame’ you instantly feel that you are transplanted back into 1990. Focused on charismatic vocals with dreamy guitar hooks and swirling bass lines the ‘Blame’ is a strong introduction to an album filled with Dream Pop greats. To top it off Mark Gardener of Ride adds his mastering talents to the song, while also mixing an additional album track ‘The Fires’.

Ah, the freedom of the middle-aged indie musician in the 2020s. With (at least) a couple of decades between today and their most memorable flirtations with underground notoriety, the artists who occupied swaths of column inches in Melody Maker and Option are now comfortably removed from any sort of modern relevance, saving them from a need (or desire) to try to fit into contemporary cultural conversation. As opposed to the classic rockers of the previous generation who never let us forget them thanks to incessant FM radio play and unending appearances at state fairs and exurban casinos, the reappearance of Lollapalooza-era artists is generally a welcome, if curious, occurrence.
