Au sommet de sa carrière d’acteur, Serge Tanneur a quitté une fois pour toutes le monde du spectacle. Trop de colère, trop de lassitude. La fatigue d’un métier où tout le monde trahit tout le monde. Désormais, Serge vit en ermite dans une maison délabrée sur l’Île de Ré… Trois ans plus tard, Gauthier Valence, un acteur de télévision adulé des foules, abonné aux rôles de héros au grand cœur, débarque sur l’île. Il vient retrouver Serge pour lui proposer de jouer "Le Misanthrope" de Molière.

A once great actor, Serge Tanneur (Fabrice Luchini), has retired from the limelight. Too much pressure meant that one day, he simply decided he would act no more. For the past three years, he has lived in solitude on the Île de Ré, spending his time cycling through the windswept landscape. Fellow actor Gauthier Valence (Lambert Wilson), whose career is flying high, is planning a production of Molière’s play The Misanthrope and wants to offer Serge the title role.

Serge Tanneur (Fabrice Luchini) is at the pinnacle of his acting career when he decides to turn his back on show business and become a hermit living off of France’s Atlantic coast. Three years later, Gauthier Valence (Lambert Wilson), a beloved TV actor, shows up on the island to offer Serge a role in his directorial debut – a rendition of Molière’s classic play, “The Misanthrope”. Serge refuses at first, but then suggests that they rehearse the first scene and after five days he’ll decide if he wants to dothe play or not. What ensues is a battle of brawn and wits and peculiar encounters with a hotel maid who longs to be a pornstar and an Italian divorcée.

Suite à un accident, Pierre, la soixantaine, se retrouve cloué au lit avec une jambe dans le plâtre. Misanthrope au caractère bien trempé rêvant de silence et de solitude, voilà que le monde s'invite à son chevet. Il assiste alors impuissant à la valse quotidienne des médecins, infirmières et personnels hospitalier, puis de ses proches dont son frère Hervé. Au fil de rencontres inattendues, drôles ou touchantes, Pierre reconsidère certains a priori et pose sur les autres un regard différent. Et, contre toute attente, ce séjour à l'hôpital finit par ressembler à une renaissance.
