During a Thanksgiving Day party we make aquaintance with a numerous and problematic family. The leading characters are three sisters: Lee, the woman of Frederick, an old misanthrope painter; Holly, who dreams of becoming a writer, or an actress, or who knows who…; Hannah, famous actress, beautiful, intelligent, good mother, good wife, good sister, in short perfect, the pivot of the family. The balance begins to break up when Hannah's husband, Elliot, falls in love with Lee, who leaves Frederick. A beautiful thriller that has more elements of mystery and romance than of the thriller that revolves around an auctioneer who has an insane collection of paintings of women. Tornatore manages to portray this lonely man in a perfect manner, even a bit too exaggerated towards the extent of that loneliness as well as the overall plot is a little bit confusing in terms of how the plan is carried out at the end, and how everything gets screwed over so suddenly and so painfully. Still, this film has gorgeous work of art and a spectacular art direction, it has Geoffrey Rush giving a nice performance: strong and emotional, and it keeps your interest, even if it's 2 hours long, and that is something to applaud.

En pleine jungle amazonienne, Edouard, un baroudeur français qui a refait sa vie (mouvementée) au sein d'une tribu indienne, trouve une petite fille "tombée du ciel" et tente vainement de s'en débarrasser. Le groupe de militaires chargé d'escorter Margaux, placé sous les ordres de l'irascible Jeff Benard vexé que cette dernière lui ait fait faux bond, fait alors irruption à son tour dans la jungle jusqu'ici tranquille d'Edouard et prend en chasse les trois compères…

Introvertie, sujette aux insomnies et se reconnaissant volontiers "misanthrope", la journaliste danoise justifie son caractère par une douloureuse histoire familiale : un père alcoolique, une mère dépressive, un divorce difficile, auxquels s'ajoutent de nombreux suicides chez ses aïeux. Bien décidée à changer de comportement, Lone Frank, également diplômée en neurobiologie, se soumet à divers tests, rencontre des psychologues et des généticiens renommés…

Boris Yellnikoff est un génie de la physique qui a raté son mariage, son prix Nobel et même son suicide. Désormais, ce brillant misanthrope vit seul, jusqu'au soir où une jeune fugueuse, Melody, se retrouve affamée et transie de froid devant sa porte. Boris lui accorde l'asile pour quelques nuits. Rapidement, Melody s'installe. Les commentaires cyniques de Boris n'entament pas sa joie de vivre et peu à peu, cet étrange couple apprend à cohabiter. Malgré son esprit supérieur, Boris finit par apprécier la compagnie de cette simple jeune femme et contre toute attente, ils vont même jusqu'à se marier, trouvant chacun leur équilibre dans la différence de l'autre.
