Lone Frank est une femme anxieuse. Introvertie, sujette aux insomnies et se reconnaissant volontiers "misanthrope", la journaliste danoise justifie son caractère par une douloureuse histoire familiale : un père alcoolique, une mère dépressive, un divorce difficile, auxquels s'ajoutent de nombreux suicides chez ses aïeux. Bien décidée à changer de comportement, Lone Frank, également diplômée en neurobiologie, se soumet à divers tests, rencontre des psychologues et des généticiens renommés…

In the suburbs of Paris, an old maid has just been murdered. Every body talks about that, except the misanthrope Mr Hire. The same evening, Alice, just getting out of jail, arrives and meets up with her lover Alfred again. They act as they do not know each other, for Alice went to jail to spare Alfred. But Mr Hire falls in love with Alice, and he knows Alfred is the murderer…

Pialat's stunningly beautiful portrait of Van Gogh's last days -widely acclaimed as the best film about the artist ever made- stars Jacques Dutronc, whose powerful performance earned him a César Award for Best Actor. The film is set between May and July 1890 in the French village of Auvers, where Van Gogh went to consult the local physician Dr. Gachet and to convalesce from his year-long stay in an asylum. When scandalous Parisian playboy Pierre Martel (Pierre Richard-Willm) is forced by his family to leave France and his adored lover Florence (Marie Bell), he begins a new life in the Foreign Legion as Pierre Muller. Drowning his regrets in camaraderie, whores, and hell-raising, he is astonished at meeting Irma (also Marie Bell), a prostitute with an uncanny resemblance to his beloved, and begins a fitful scheme to allow her escape.

Suite à un accident, Pierre, la soixantaine, se retrouve cloué au lit avec une jambe dans le plâtre. Misanthrope au caractère bien trempé rêvant de silence et de solitude, voilà que le monde s'invite à son chevet. Il assiste alors impuissant à la valse quotidienne des médecins, infirmières et personnels hospitalier, puis de ses proches dont son frère Hervé. Au fil de rencontres inattendues, drôles ou touchantes, Pierre reconsidère certains a priori et pose sur les autres un regard différent. Et, contre toute attente, ce séjour à l'hôpital finit par ressembler à une renaissance.
