The ten symphonies of Louis Spohr span a period of forty-six years which saw music move from the Classical dominance of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven to the Romantic era of Berlioz, Liszt and Wagner. Spohr himself was an important link in this development, through his exploitation of chromatic harmony, his formal experiments and his four programmatic symphonies. When Spohr composed his first symphony in 1811, Beethoven still had to write his seventh, eighth and ninth, but by the time of Spohr’s final one in 1857 the entire symphonic output of Schubert, Mendelssohn and Schumann had come and gone, and all three of these composers were dead.

Volume 2 of Antal Doráti's London recordings for Mercury covers sessions between June 1960 (Tchaikovsky's Pathétique Symphony) and August 1966 (Tchaikovsky's Orchestral Suites). By way of a bonus, the set concludes with a rarity issued on Philips and scarcely seen since, an album of neoclassical works by Julian Orbón (Cantigas del Rey, sung by Heather Harper) and Manuel de Falla (the Harpsichord Concerto, with Rafael Puyana). Dorati's ear for color, his rhythmic discipline and knife-edged attack were complemented by the high-definition, pin-point detail of Mercury's 35mm stereo engineering. Works by Doráti's countryman Bartók came to life on record as never before. The versions of the Concerto for Orchestra, Divertimento for Strings and Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta have scarcely been equalled since for atmosphere and accuracy. No less valuably, the box brings together the Mercury/Doráti versions of Bartók's principal works for the stage, Bluebeard's Castle (now with the spoken introduction included on CD for the first time) and The Miraculous Mandarin, as well as a definitive recording of The Wooden Prince.

Tchaikovsky's four suites for orchestra don't have the structural heft or the emotional impact of his seven symphonies, but they are lovely. For the listener who savors the Russian composer's specific sound world but is not in the mood for being emotionally overtaxed, these suites are just the thing. The first two are collections of character pieces, the First with its Divertimento and Intermezzo, the Second with its Valse and Danse baroque. The later two are more substantial, the Third with its extended series of Variations, and the Fourth with its heartfelt homages to Mozart. This is ideal light Tchaikovsky.
