“The Mystic Path (Sendero Mistico) begins in Mexico City's daily existence. Wrapped inside it, tributes and favors solicited from pagan deities silently remain. These picturesque rituals and sorceries occur day after day; however, they are looked upon with a gaze accustomed to the extravagant. Exotic treasures are assimilated as part of daily life.”
–-liner notes written by Sonido Gallo Negro for “Sendero Mistico”

Horacio Hernandez, affectionally known as “El Negro” is one in-demand drummer! He has graced the efforts of Carlos Santana, and Afro Cuban sessions of Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and Michel Camilo. He may be Cuba’s most famous exported present-day drummer. He had defected from Cuba to Italy, and now makes his home in the melting pot of New York City. His debut as a leader, Italuba, was nominated for a Grammy. Now he is back with Italuba II, a melange of rock, jazz, and Afro Cuban rhythms. It’s a winning mix as evidenced on the trumpet driven anthemic Te Prima; the lyrical straight ahead jazz of Afternoon at the Boulevard; and the fusion Metheny-like, Mr. Also highly enjoyable is the Caribbean feel of Meridien, dedicated to Paquito D’Rivera.

Genre: Flamenco, Ethnic Fusion

Tomatito is one of the leaders of a movement that has been called flamenco nuevo, which combines Spanish flamenco guitar with other Latin forms. For this virtuoso Spanish guitarist/composer, elements of everything from Cuban to Brazilian music are fair game. Flamenco nuevo has been incredibly popular in Spain since the '90s, and one of its biggest sellers was Barrio Negro (which was released in Spain in 1991 and in the U.S. in 1993). This very fresh-sounding and largely instrumental CD shows that while Tomatito (who has major chops as well as plenty of soul) owes a great artistic debt to traditional flamenco, he isn't a traditionalist or a purist himself. Not at all. It is Tomatito's willingness to stretch and broaden flamenco that makes Barrio Negro the exciting album it is.
